O-gami or Origamido?

Post by phillipcurl »

Which do you guys prefer?
I only have to pay $11 for origamido paper, but I still have to pay $16 for o-gami.
I don't know if it would be worth to pay the extra $5 for o-gami paper even though it is slightly larger, which would be better for more advanced folds.

so anyway enough ranting.

They both felt pretty similar while I was folding them. :I
However, I think I can remember origamido being a bitch when it came to creases, being not very visible after a crease. While the o-gami was a little nicer.
Origamido I found to be very inconsistent while I was using it. And while I only used one sheet of the o-gami, the origamido just felt like it was an only insects paper. Other times it just doesn't feel like it wants to be folded at all if it wasn't something super complex.
With the o-gami, I knew I folded two complex models, but they felt like I could use them for simpler models, which I'm going to design some just for the amount I have left (I folded it in half and used half for two complex, and the rest will hopefully be my designs).

It is kind of a hard thing to judge, as they're handmade by different papermakers.

Origamido tends to play to the model you want to fold, they special make batches depending on the color, texture, and thickness, etc.. So an Origamido sheet may have metallic pigments, be extra beaten, thin, and primarily made of abaca fiber for an insect model, but for say an intermediate pig it may be thicker and have cotton/hemp fibers added in to give it more use in wetfolding and adding a texture to the finished model. So, in essence, Origamido is made to order, but they sometimes make available the extras from their projects at conventions or through sellers (last time I bought some I got a wide variety and at $8 per sheet). I'd say that they're probably the best for experience and custom work, but probably not the most accessible.

I don't really know much about Paper Circle, but they are apparently experienced papermakers as well (though I'm not sure on origami specific paper), and gaining fame amongst folders, probably due to the availability of their work over Origamido. I'd say they work as Origamido would, with custom work, but for availability and mass production, their paper is probably aimed at a wider variety of folds. I can't really judge between the two, but Robert Lang has an article on The Fold (OUSA's online magazine). I've yet to read it myself since it is in the members only section, but I think it would be an interesting read.

So in short, custom paper, by nature, varries from project to project. It isn't like judging american foil vs japanese foil or something, and since they're both experienced in papermaking, their work should be high quality regardless (though maybe not for a specific project).

I was thinking of making insects with it anyway, thats the whole reason I bought it, and am wondering about the o-gami.
I am trying plain tissue paper for insects but its very hard to work with so far.

Using the gold they have for o-gami in their thinnest, I made Satoshi's phoenix 3.5. It turned out really well :)

I have folded with both a few times. Of course both are excellent for complex insects and the like but I do prefer the O-gami. Mostly it's because of the crispness of the O-gami relative to the Origamido. I have always felt the need to size Origamido but not the O-gami (I still use some MC for leg compression, shaping and such). The origamido feels "softer" which may suit some models. I also prefer the larger size O-gami sheets and the metallic sheen of their lustre papers looks fantastic under a spotlight.

i said this in the prior ogami thread, but be mindful of what your project is before you buy a sheet of ogami. if you're not doing an insect, the medium thickness paper will probably suit your needs better.
