I am undecided about whether his method is bad. I guess if he can make many models out of one base that makes the designing process faster, which could mean he can make more models quicker but if the folding process gets too thick then it is a bad idea. It also depends on whether he uses one square of paper with no cuts (pure origami). I find it hard to imagine he made a centipede and a beetle out of the same base just modified.
