Hi all,

Having just delivered the MS of ODS2 to the publisher, I can clarify some of the speculations :? and true facts expressed above.

Overall, I expect the length will increase by about 100 pages. (That's a rough estimate, comparing the size of this MS to the original MS. We won't know for sure till the publisher lays things out.)

The old Chapter 14, with all the big honkin' equations, is gone.

There are 4 "new" diagrams -- "new" in quotes, because these have been published in hard-to-find places before, so they're not truly new. But by popular request (or my own whim):
Dancing Crane
Silverfish
Roosevelt Elk
Organist

The old chapter 12, Box Pleating, has been broken up. The first part, "boxy" box-pleating, has been expanded and talks about other techniques of pleating (like the Troublewit-style pleating used in the Organist).

The second part, uniaxial box pleating, has been expanded and has become its own chapter, chapter 13. For those who have seen my presentation on polygon packing, much of this will be familiar.

There's another new chapter, chapter 14, which is devoted to polygon packing and techniques like Pythagorean stretches, layer management, hex pleating, and general polygon packing (polygons of any angle). Some of this is also in my polygon packing presentation, a lot of it is entirely new. This chapter ends, not with diagrams, but with 10 CPs, some old, some new. The mysterious elevation color scheme alluded to above is there, and I hope, clearly explained!

Oh yeah: I give specific dimensions and more detailed instructions for the ol' scaled Koi back in Chapter 7.

Pricing-wise, I wouldn't trust what amazon is showing, since final pricing will only be determined after the publisher does the layout and knows how big it is. (You'll have to pay a surcharge for the forklift to deliver it. :? )

Timing-wise, the publisher has said that they'll strive to have galley proofs to look at at OUSAcon in June, and I've expressed my great desire that they have real physical copies ready by Tanteidan and KOA conventions in August. Don't know how real any of that is -- as you may know, A K Peters was recently bought out by CRC Press/Taylor & Francis, and there is a certain amount of disruption that has come along with that. (But Klaus Peters, the "K" of A K Peters, is still running things, for now.)

Hope this is helpful! And I hope you enjoy the new edition when it comes out.

Regards,

Robert

P.S.Per Hank's comment above, yes, you WILL need a gamma-ray laser to score all the patterns. It's very hard to fold wearing the lead gloves and apron, but worth it.

Have you considered making the book available for Kindle?

@dcbaok: the way it's published (print, e-book, etc.) is the publisher's call. I haven't heard anything from AKP about e-book editions yet. I doubt it would work well in Kindle, with all the color imagery, but an iPad or Android e-book version would certainly be a natural fit for a 700-page tome!

@Trouble: nearly all the stuff in the first book will be in there. Chapter 14, the Algorithms chapter, is gone, but the rest of the text and all the diagrams are still there.
