Hi guys, I have always wanted to say this but never found the right place.

My reasons why I love Dollar Bill Origami
1) I always have a note on me
2) For some reason people think its way cooler then Origami
3) I can and do give them away as presents
4) You can see the look of frustration when you do a fold on say a $100 bill and the owners so wants to spend that money but decides to keep it. Its a real ego booster!!
5) I find it inspires people way more then traditional Origami.

I do not like folding Money Origami.
For me it has a bad, capitalistic taste...
No offense, just what came to my mind when i read your thread.

When i create Origami i often give the models away for presents, or i fold in the train and leave the models there as perhaps little presents for people or kids who like what i created.
Maybe i can even amaze them, who knows...

the very fact that you use money to create something as opposed to using its financial value is beautiful.

I don't really like folding money either. Some of the models look great, but I'd rather use normal paper for my models.

1) I usually have a note on me aswell, but they're often rather old and they can't really be used to fold any proper models. I rarely see any new bills that haven't been mangled yet.
2) Why exactly would it be cooler to create a simple model using a small piece of paper, instead of creating amazing complex models? ( Like Ryu Jin or insects )
3) I give away models made of copy paper or even random sheets of paper that I get at school and people love it.
4) It would have to be an amazing model if someone would actually rather keep it folded rather than spend it. I have yet to see a model that is impressive enough that I wouldnt just unfold and spend it.
5) Why would it be more inspiring? I don't find Origami to be 'inspiring' at all, actually. I see it as an amazingly cool art and craft.

Cooler - wrong word,
Its more of a delicate art form,
I find by using the complex patterns on the note the inspiring part.
When people see actual faces develop - THEY SMILE! <----------------
Forget the "Money aspect"
Squiffy notes are fine sometimes,
its the creativity that counts.

Hehe, well, I guess I'm kind of a purist when it comes to Origami, so I'm just not too fond of folding anything other than a square.

Ah well, the most important thing is that you enjoy doing it and that everyone around you likes it too. Didn't mean to sound pushy or anything. I just didn't really agree with what you said.

Yes yes yes to billfolding! After about a year or two of designing I realized that about 3/4ths of my designs were all from dollar bills. I generally have a few dollar bills in my wallet (especially since I make a point to try to make my change 1s based on the bills I use ), so it is easy-to-find paper. There are interesting challenges and possibilities in using a dollar to fold with (i.e. it is small and thick, but it is a long ~3x7 rectangle). Beautiful things can still be achieved with a dollar.

What if the simple model is better? Simple models can evoke different responses than complex ones can. Giang Dinh's dancers are incredible, yet very simple. here is some of his work. The same goes for grandmaster Yoshizawa's work.

Have you seen Won Park's billfolds? He has some amazing work-his folding is incredibly precise and he does things out of a dollar bill that most people are hard-pressed to do out of a large sheet (yes, insects, arachnids, and dragons-even a camera with a lens, flash, shutter button and some other button that I forget the name of ). The Carp, is one of my personal favorite folds. Its not actually that hard to master would you believe, however the trick is keeping the bill SPOTLESS as you do it.

I don't do many money folds, but I do enjoy them. I'm more of a square purist, but I often fold money models for tips at restaurants. Won Park and John Montroll are my favorite creators in this category, I often fold Montroll's piggy bank for tips more than others (a pig model with a sunken back with room for a quarter to sit on top). I never seem to carry money these days, prefering my debit card.

Hope your debit card doesn't fold!!!

I too have folded dollar bill designs mostly using plain paper in that proportion.

I am fascinated that so many models can be created out of such a small paper, my most favorite ones being Stephen Weiss's and Won Park's....he designed a $Potty that is so awesome, i wish he would diagram it soon. But for money folders looking for diagrams....LOOK HERE
