Hello fellow folders... :) a question or two for you

Hello! i stumbled upon this forum and found it very interesting. i once love folding origami but stopped for a few years now.

i'm from Malaysia (anyone from Malaysia here?), and find that it is really difficult to find good origami books. i've got two Robert Lang books (insects and fish) which i had to make a special order from the US a few years ago. managed to do almost all (i stopped at the grasshopper... couldn't finish it! arrgghhh!!!).

looking at all these wonderful pictures on this forum of one square uncut origami really makes me wanna start again. but i remember taking hours just to complete one insect, but the sense of achievement is really something!

my frustration is that i feel i'll always just be a follower. i can follow most of the complicated diagrams, but i don't understand how does all these origami masters even start to create them. i want to be a creator as well. wonder if any of you folks get this feeling. so i guess that was one of the reason i kinda stopped folding.

but anyway, it's good to see so many fellow origami lovers. if any of u got some advice for me, would love to hear it!

I got to spend some time in KL back in the late 90's. I bought all my Montroll books (African Animals, Sculpture, Zodiac, Enthusiast) as well as the two books you've mentioned (Sealife and Insects), plus Lang's Complete Origami and Brill's Brilliant Origami from PageONE at Lot10. I remember walking out of Lot10 wearing a smile that reached up to my ears. Heheheh.

I guess it's best to start by folding a model you want, then if you encounter any problems, you can ask help in the forums.

It's not that hard to find origami books here, you just need to know where to look. I'll give you a list of the best places to find books. This is provided you live in the city, that is.
1. Kinokuniya in KLCC
2. Borders in The Curve
3. MPH in Midvalley
4. MPH in One Utama
In Borders, I found Origami Insects, Origami Sea Life, The Complete Book of Origami, Origami Sculptures, Dollar Bill Origami, Teach Yourself Origami, and plenty of other crap that normal people wouldn't ordinarily buy. Once, the MPH in One Utama had several copies of Origami Insects and The Complete Book of Origami. Michael Laffose's Advanced Origami is probably the most common origami book you can find. One time, I actually found TWO copies of Origami Design Secrets in Midvalley. But that time I was "supposed" to get my Kamiya book. Of course, that didn't happen for another SIX MONTHS because my parents "never" have time to mail my order for me. In the end, we just ordered online, which costs nearly two times more. And I still don't have Design Secrets.

search the forum theres quite afew posts on designing your own models and robert langs ""origami design secrets"" is what you'll probably hear for books to buy;.

thanks eric_son, angrydemon, for your tips on how to get books here in KL! the irony is I'm working in Lot10 area and i've not checked the book here! the last time i checked for origami books must have been about 8 years ago i think... I'm not sure if PageONE is still around (gotta check after work).

Designs Secrets seems like a very good book for design, from the replies i am getting. I'll go do some research on the book! by the way angrydemon, how much did u see the book selling for in Midvalley?

Yeah! I know the feeling. I think there was even some dust on the covers of some of the books I bought in KL. The Brilliant Origami book on the other hand had dirty edges and looked like a used telephone directory -- signs that probably a thousand people already perused the book but put it back. Good thing there was a sealed copy available.

Howdy! I'm new to this site as well, been looking for a god one for a while, and I think this is it!

To be a creator, just fold as much of everyone else's work that you can. There is always something that I do differently after I make one per the instructions. I find little things that can make the design better. Once you built a lot of designs, then using standard bases, you can start to make your own folds and designs.

The trick is forward thinking. You need to think about what you can do with something after a fold, and if you should even make that fold.

BTW- I'm looking for the plans for the Ra-Noshi Frog by Darudas. His site seems to be down. Everyone talks about it, everyone's made one, but I cant find the instructions that are better than the really terrbile 12 step line drawings. I played with Frog designs today. Had a lot of fun, but I'm stuck on the Ra-Noshi design, I cant get to the middle steps. It's still fun though- i tried to think my way through the design without the instructions. Didnt get it. Thanks for any help if you have good diagrams or photos of the design to share.

Anyways- I'm about to buy another book or two myself. Always something I can learn!

I think it was around RM230. I'm not sure if it's still there though. Maybe some rich bastard is using it as a door stopper.
