The Lost Montroll Turtle

Post by kareshi »

I met Mr. Montroll at the Origami USA Convention in 1994 and he had an early version of North American Animals with him, which a small class got to fold things from (including me.) There was a turtle in it that I really enjoyed making, the shell was neat as it wrapped around and locked together on the underside. When the book was finally published, the turtle was absent and I've been wondering about it ever since. It's also possible that it was a Fumiaki Kawahata contribution, but I'm not sure.
Does anyone know of any John Montroll turtle that was never published in any Dover book? It's also not in my Origami USA Annual Collections from '91, '94, '95, or '96. I used to have contact information for Mr. Montroll but have lost it through the years.

I've heard that Montroll often uses conventions as testing grounds for models that he is considering publishing in books. Maybe he's still revising the diagrams for a future release...

Montroll says the turtle has never been published, but I may be able to get a copy.

So I have diagrams for the Lost Montroll Turtle. It is really interesting to see the style then and the number of steps (46) it took to get the results. I suspect he could do it now in about 30 steps. It has a closed belly and top, which is very important for a turtle.
Cheers,

Thanks for checking it out for me! Maybe he can contribute it to The Fold or something, I'd love to see it released. Or be able to fold it again.
