Finding the right paper for this.

Post by haddyDrow »

Hello, fellow folders! :)
I want to create this model as a gift to a former teacher of mine:
Here's a good picture of it and the diagram:

http://mars.wnec.edu/~thull/fit.html
I've been folding for a few years now and I don't have any problem with making the model itself, but as I began making the triangles needed for it, it fell apart.
I understand how the pocket-flip works, but it seems the paper I have is too weak, and I am looking for a stronger paper that will fit what I am trying to make.
I tried: printer paper, note paper and some kind of origami paper that's good for the Haga style but not for this (it's kind of slim and holds creases well).
Does anyone have any suggestions? I'd love to hear your opinions.
Thank you.

you may not like this answer, but i believe the solution is glue.

if you are adamant about not using glue, you could always give tant a whirl. if that fails the list gets even shorter. elephant hide is certainly very stiff but the palette is not expansive. which just leaves construction paper and cardstock.

USD dollar bill - that's one of the answers

You'll have to fold the (long side) edges in a bit to get the right size though. If you use a bonefolder or something similar to get a crisp edge then you shouldn't need glue.

Thank you for the quick replies!

I might just cheat and use glue, then..
What's Tant and bonefolder?
I believe elephant hide is not sold in here (Israel) So dollar bills are not an option, either :)

I actually used regular origami paper (patterned, found in Chinatown) for mine and it holds perfectly well without any sort of support.
