Best origami book

Post by ForceFold »

Hello I'm new to this forum. I have been able to get some extra money recently and want to buy some good origami books at a reasonable price. I want to know what the best origami book is, and how much it costs so I can order it. Thank you in advance!

Can you give a bit more guidance? Do you have any books already? Are you looking for just diagrams or something with a bit of background about origami/designing/etc? Any preference as to subjects (animals, human figures, tesselations, etc) and difficulty level? I'm sure lots of people will be happy to make suggestions, but there is a very wide range to choose from!

I've gotten some books from the library before but only own simple books from when I started I prefer mostly animal models and other interesting models but I don't really like tesselatons. I'm good enough to fold the ancient dragon but not ryuzin

Personally I'd recommend "Genuine Origami" by Jun Maekawa. It's got a great range of models, largely animals but some others too, range of complexity, but all of them have a nice style to the finished article and most don't need special paper to fold. It's nice and cheap from Amazon too.

I've not got the book, but "Works of Satoshi Kamiya" is highly rated I gather, if you liked the ancient dragon (although presumably you've seen it already if you've folded the AD). More expensive though. You'd need to get it from origami-shop.com.

Classic Montroll books are great for intermediate folders, and they're all easily obtainable online and inexpensive. My favorites:
-Origami Sea Life (Montroll/Lang)
-African Animals in Origami
-Prehistoric Origami

Thanks! chris, I actually haven't folded that dragon yet :( but I have folded models of that complexity and I hope I would be able to fold it. I've been wanting to get that book for a while but haven't gotten that much money to use on a book.
I am also interested in origami zoo because I have folded some of the models from that book (like the lion and so forth) and like the way they turn out and how it only takes me about 15-20 min. to fold the models.
I am also looking at the book Origami Design Secrets because right now I am only a novice at designing models and want to get better at it. I have folded the tree frog and it turned out quite nice, (I'm not sure I can quite fold the koi yet as I am not vey good at scale patterns)I really like langs books because most of them can be fond for a really good price on Amazon because Lang is a quite famous folder from America.
I would have trouble getting books from internation sellers seeing as I do not have a paypal accout, but for some reason those are my favorite books like Kamiya and other books like that. The only site that I really like that sells internationally is Nicolis Terrys origami shop because I have not yet looked at the USA The Fold Shop.
Does anyone know if The Fold website has better deals than origami shop? If so please tell me!!

If you're even vaguely considering getting Origami Design Secrets then yes, get it! Absolutely essential. You will not regret it. And I think there is an updated version recently out with a few extra bits in it too.

I agree with chris_t about Design Secrets. If you have the stomach for a good bit of reading (and if you're like me, taking notes), you will learn great techniques for designing your own stuff in addition to folding the superb models.
[flickrEtsy] You can also friend me on Facebook; just be all "origami, man!" and I'll be all "origami, bro!" and then we'll have fun Facebook adventures.

For advance models. There is no better book than Works of Satoshi Kamiya in my opinion. Kamiya's models are very well known and extremely pleasurable to fold.
