Dear friends and colleagues!!!!
This long-awaited moment has come.
It's time to reveal the results of the Seventh International Origami Olympiad. I am proud to congratulate you on behalf of all judges!
This year's works were performed with such professionalism that until the very end all members of the Jury had absolutely no idea about who was going to win.
Medals:
By tradition our Olympiad features the medal system. Essentially, each judge chooses the best works in every nomination and rewards them with bonus points equal to 30%, 20% or 10% of maximum score for a given task. Works with the highest final score are then awarded with gold, silver and bronze medals.
And finally I remind you that all the jury members are mere humans and they can make mistakes. So it is perfectly natural to disagree with some of the jury's decisions.
This year, the authors of the models took part in the judging of the Olympiad. Here is a summary of this year's IOIO Team roster:
1. Alejandro Pascual Marquez (Spain)
30 years old, I was born in Madrid (Spain) and I'm currently living in the United Kingdom working as an Environmental Engineer.
I like nature, art and technology. In my free time, I like to do all kinds of crafts such as modeling, drawing, woodworking and of course origami.
My first contact with origami was when I was 10 years old and my grandfather gave me my first book as a present. I have never spent as much time as I would like on this art, but I would like to be able to do it.
I like to create my own models, and I would like to publish my own book in the future.
2. Andrey Ermakov (Russia)
Founder of IOIO. Jury member for many years, with the exception of 2021. Author of many origami models, origami design technics and books.
Music composer, programmer, mathematician and engineer. In his spare time, he makes candles and sometime and practicing muay thai, writing poetry and drawing.
3. Angelina Patsevich (Belarus)
27 years old, origami artist. Lives in Minsk, Belarus. Biologist-botanist, works at the Faculty of Biology of Belarusian State University. She is fond of drawing, origami, photography, collects minerals. Participant of IOIO 2016-2018, member of the IOIO-2021 team.
4. Arseni Kazhamiakin (Belarus)
Origami tessellations artist. 24y.o. and I live in Belarus. I work in IT sphere, sometimes play music, love to read books, hiking and cycling when possible. In 2013 when I was in school I started folding a sheet of paper in a bellows shape, like an accordion. That is the first time I remember myself folding a pattern. Then I stumbled upon tesselations by Joel Cooper and that's when the Kindle started. I didn't even dream of repeating his works so I started trying to design my own pieces which weren't much. At the moment I have several hundred original designs and I'm trying to share the oldest ones. So maybe next year I'll finally run out of pieces to share, but it's rather unlikely because I'm continuing to create new patterns.
5. Edward Mistretta (USA)
20, USA is a student pursuing a Bachelor of Music degree in Trombone Performance at Mannes School of Music in Manhattan, New York City. After college he intends to win a full-time job in an opera or symphony orchestra in addition to teaching music. Edward finds origami designing very relaxing as it helps him manage stress and express himself creatively. He especially loves folding recursions, tessellations, and other geometric designs and posts photos of his creations on Instagram. Eventually, Edward aspires to one day publish his own origami book (which he is currently making) as well as be invited as a guest teacher at an origami convention outside of the US.
6. JUN ZI YOU (China)
Origami can make me not think about anything. This is why I like origami.
7. Peter Keller (Germany)
Peter is a daytime mathematician working mainly on geometric origami at night. He has a particular interest in origami tessellations and about 17 years of experience both in designing and folding on his back. He publishes his work on social media under the pseudonym Valleyfolder and even sells his own origami paper. One day he might even publish his own book about flagstone tessellations.
8. Dzmitry Lysiuk (Belarus)
50 years old. Physics in optics and spectroscopy. Winner of IOIO 2011 and 2015. General judje of IOIO IX 2021.
Thanks to everyone who was with us in this game!
Fold love, not war.
