Origami Design Secrets by Dr. Robert Lang is good for some of the theory behind designing origami.

You don't need to be able to circle packing for folding. For designing models, circle packing is an efficient way of arranging flaps on paper. It's explained pretty well in the book I mentioned.

As for the paper, I'm not sure as I haven't folded the model. Large and thin, though. Obviously.

i hate circle packing. to me, box pleating is much better. with 22,5 though it is easier to find the references, often, you don't even need a ruler or reference finder. i still don't like it, though.

the water strider by Chan is one such example, just do a blintzs fold, unfold it, and then continue from there. it took me like 25 minutes to precrease it.

Regarding the paper for Iron Man. I'd suggest making some tissue foil. If you haven't done it before just get some gift tissue paper (The kind you would find in a dollar store works just fine). Glue it to a sheet of aluminum foil using some spray glue and cut to a square (12inches+ should do) This will give you some nice color change paper for this model.
Other tips: Find shortcuts when precreasing; for instance the series of parallel box pleats in the center can be obtained by folding a water bomb base and creasing horizontally through all layers, or the finger pleats can be obtained similarly by folding the diagonals and the creasing one way through all layers, etc. If you need more help just ask!

Thanks! I will get some pretty tissue paper and spray glue soon. Do you get yellow foil? (Or red, iron man is red and yellow)
I will also look for the book by robert lang. As far as i am concerned, i will be catching up on things i should have already.

you can get gold foil in some stores, but i don't know if there are any that sell it in the UK. you can probably buy some online, though.

You could always look for shiny wrapping paper. I can't say I've looked much for coloured foil, but you could paste some tissue paper to red or gold wrapping paper. Might be easier to come by. Or if you find both, you can stick them back to back to have (shiny) red and gold paper.

If you really want gold I would do what Falcifer suggests, double tissue foil. Thickness will be good in some parts, but it might get too thick in the fingers. I made one with silver and red and it turned out looking great! I believe one of Stark's suits is red and Silver anyways.

This is getting off topic, methinks.

However much this discussion is enjoyable (a lot) and however much it is helping me (no end) we have gone off topic, although it is sort of helping someone with a future crease pattern, instead of discussing previous ones, like we have been for some 5 pages. This topic needed more of a range of tenses anyway.

although, i would say the recent few posts would better belong in the 'crease pattern faq' forum, but oh well.
