Help Me become an Expert ?

Post by firtha12 »

I'm not an Expert at Maths or understanding much about ( Circle-packing & Box-pleating ) but in the last few months and Years I would have used them in some models I have done but still ---- Instead of telling me about books that have to much information on about such things like ( Circle-packing and Box-pleating ) could someone please just let me know certain and specific things about ( Circle-packing and Box-pleating )

I want to know how a Origami Artist looks at something either it been a insect or bird or warrior or human form or anything like that.

I mean how do Origami Artists work out how to put Things they see in the real world or on tv on the internet how do they work out how to put a crease pattern of it on paper

Please someone HELP ME.

Read Origami Design Secrets [Lang] for a very structured description of 50+ years of Origami design methods.

Read Genuine Origami [Maekawa] for progressive methods of modifications of models.

Read Creating Origami [Nolan] for an artistic approach to design of models.

Fold lots of models of increasing complexity, until to see the common bases, applications, and patterns. For example, if you want wings, you might use a bird base, legs - a frog base... and you can recognize these patterns in the crease pattern. As you get more experienced, you can make more sophisticated choices and decisions. You'll also notice that each Origami artist has a style of folds, patterns, and solutions used to create the desired function or look. Borrow those and make small modifications to see the effect.

Consider it to be like reading or playing the piano - it takes a lot of hard work in the beginning to learn the basic alphabet or vocabulary of Origami Design [ which is different that Origami folding].

BTW, I DON'T design Origami... b/c I never had the patience to learn the vocabulary... [However, I am an accomplished Architect and designer in other fields.]

It just takes time, folding lots of models and thinking about how and why different structures are used to produce different shapes. Understanding the circle packing and box pleating theory in detail will help you a lot, but, but there is no secret or silver bullet that makes you suddenly good at designing. Its a matter of slowly building up proficiency and learning as you go. Start solving crease patterns, if you don't already. Nothing increases your understanding of design like solving cps, and really thinking about why the model's creator used certain structures, etc. Then you will eventually begin to see how the structures and patterns you are seeing in the cps can be used in your own designs.

That being said, I don't profess to be a master, or even any good at design. I've designed a few models, but I've really had to put origami on the back burner these last couple years. I am 2 weeks away from finishing my last term, and am planning to dive into origami again full time.

Hope this helps, and good luck on your journey of discovery!
If you can't fold it, try a bazooka.
