Kawasaki Rose Box

Well for the last few hours I've been playing around with Melisande's idea of having a calyx on the box, but unfortunietly I really cant replicate Melisande's variation on this idea. So I've tried my own variation.

Heres what I've come up with:

As you can see now the rose is smaller now. Its now made of 1/2 the size of the squared paper I used for the box.

And for the calyx, is made from a 'wind mill' base(sorry if thats wrong), using the same sized paper as the box itself.

Im really quite happy with this box now, and I think it dosent need any more improvments. But if you guys got some suggestions, keep them coming.

i found the diagram for the hexagonal rose box if anyone wants it

Anyways I would like to finally present my finished box. This time 'ive use thick marble paper to give it a nice textured look, and also give it that stiffness so that it can acutally be used as a box.

Heehee... Sorry to bump this thread back up (again), but.... I couldn't resist the challenge.

Needless to say, it isn't too good to be true. 10 inch kami, about two hours of free time, and here we go. I'll post a complete box as soon as I get another hour or two and a bigger sheet of paper, which won't be for a couple of days.

Thank you for the challenge, Brimstone. That was both fun and surprisingly hard. If anyone else manages to do the same thing, please post your results.

Oh yeah....

I should have said something about that.

Basically what I did was to treat each petal as a point, as per box pleating; I dissected the original kawasaki rose to figure out how it worked, then superimposed the crease pattern onto a larger grid (16x16 instead of 8x8) and played with the pleats until it condensed into a 1x1 square tube, as in the original; then I just spread out some of the pleats at the base of the rose itself and there it was. I will say, though, it took about an hour and a half of playing with the pleats to get it to work, although now that I've figured it out I don't think it would take that long.

I can try and make a CP in the next few days, if you want; I might be able to pull off diagrams as well, but they would take a lot longer, and end up relatively complex. However, I'm not sure if it can be folded just from a CP, it might take diagrams to properly explain what's going on so you don't have to fiddle with it for hours like I did.

Took about five minutes to come up with a design, ten more to fold it, and three more to figure out where to pull out paper for the big curvy petals. From six inch floral-patterned origami paper.

Nice. I suggest you use a larger square so that you have more paper for the actual box.

I'm only folding with this flowery stuff, because I'm pretty much out of decent paper. When I was on winter break I went back home and looked at my usual paper places and couldn't find anything. Just import paper (lokta, unryu, etc.), of which I already have plenty, but which is such a hassle to use. I think I'm going to have to start ordering online or something. As far as the rose's size with respect to the whole box (since I'm assuming that is what you mean) you could change it by using a grid wider than 16x16, say 18x18 or 20x20. I just wanted it to take up the entire top.
