Subtitles for videos

Hi all,

I thought I'd give adding subtitles to some of my videos another try. I've started with subtitles on my latest video, "The Last Waltz" by Neil Elias. I think it's a particularly interesting model, because instructions are hard to get for many of you out there.

So far, I've done subtitles for the first part (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yKep3zvKicI) in English and German. To activate subtitles, go on the up arrow on the bottom right corner of the video box, then on the left arrow next to "CC". A small menu should pop up that lets you pick the language.

I was wondering whether anyone was interested in helping me by
(a) testing whether they match the video, and
(b) translating the text into other languages.
I fear I'm only fluent in English and German, so it stops there. I already had lots of trouble with finding the right origami terms in German.

Basically I think that subtitles are a great idea, especially since I usually don't have audio turned on when I'm on the internet.

Also it's far better that you can still read the text when you pause the video, and I rather read than listen to someone.

Just aesthetically I don't really like the subtitle-styling that YouTube offers and I'd rather go for self-styled subtitles and encode them into the video. Of course, then you would have to upload two videos if you want two separate languages...

I agree with Gerwin in all cases.
also I think its a good idea to make subtitles although I don't know where to stop

basically there should be subtitles in english, french and spanish, but maybe its enough to subtitle in english, because I assume that most people are better in reading english than speaking or hearing it.

Yes, subtitles are great. They make things that much more accessible to other people, it's totally worthwhile.

Why should it be translated? in which language?

you explained it with fluency English and very clean, I believe everyone can understand it.

Ah, well...

Captions (English) are good for those that know English, but have hearing disabilities or don't like watching the videos with sound. And for many it will be easier to read English, rather than listen to it.
Subtitles (translated) are good for those that have a hard time with English, both listening and reading.

In the end, not everyone is as proficient in English as others. My videos are about highlighting models, but it's also about making them more accessible. I do this by explaining steps and showing them, but I think language can also be a big barrier.

Does anyone here know Arabic? Check the first part at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yKep3zvKicI and activate Arabic subtitles. Linda, who is translating these, will be working on the other parts soon.

A cousin of mine is living in Yemen and learning Arabic. Maybe I'll send him the link. I don't think he knows much about origami though.
