and I see it looks like you've tried to do a little shaping on the horse there. It's not perfect, but at least its a start. what you need to do is continue to shape the form until it matches more with whats shown in the diagrams or in the book. shaping is an important part and shouldn't be just roughly done.
but its good to see that you're making the effort

Cardinals don't actually have markings like that. they are completely red save for the one black patch surrounding the beak and on the face and on the neck.
try and use more photo reference when working.
you could probably pass it off as some other type of bird, but those certainly aren't the markings of a cardinal
