Joshua, I agree with you that simple models are a lot harder do than complex or intermediate models but even so those models aren't really that elegant. Some advice when designing simple models- you will have to reject most of your models. This is what I have to do. I have a whole box full of rejected sketches, rejected because they just weren't efficient or they just didn't work for me. Having said that, I don't really think the problem of elegance of those models lies with the base, I think it is just poor shaping. If you wetfolded those models from heavy art paper, they could look great.
Another bit of advice when designing simple models- your model does nit have to have all it's appendages to look like what you want it to look like- for example, legs- for examples of this see Quentin Trollip's hippo, Nick Robinson's fly, and some of Andrew hudson's minimalist models.

hey josh do you still have that origamido ancient dragon? if you can unfold it completely without it ripping you can add water and have it good as new!

Sorry to say Josh but you've made the back of the lizard wrong. The "spikes" need to go inside not outside (they should not be visible as spikes).

It has not been released, as I still want to improve it, but I did display the CP alongside the folded Eoraptor at PCOC 2009. You can see it in some convention photos.
