Glue or Adhesive to display mount models??

Post by CinCin »

For Christmas, my husband suggested to make origami scenes and put them in one of those cases normally used to display model cars. I made a few and I think it looks great. I need to mount the pieces into the display case. Anyone suggest the best type of glue or adhesive to mount the models without damaging the paper? Most of the models are made from washi or tempura paper. I plan to mount tissue paper on a piece of cardboard first and then mount the models into the display case. Then do some sort of scenary, kinda like a fish aquarium

I tested with standard school glue (wet type). is 'spreads' and you can see it

I've never displayed models in this type of manner so I'm clueless, but I figured someone out there must have done something similar. :) I'm more of the purist type so not accustomed to using glue

Hey there CinCin,
Unfortunately when you are mounting models in a frame or a shadowbox, (with adhesive) they're in there for good: removing them won't be easy and will cause damage. When I mount representational work in shadowboxes I use an archival glue or PVA. Nori is also a great adhesive as well. Try moistening the paper lightly on the model beforehand so the glue absorbs into the fibers and adheres strongly as opposed to the adhesive being put on dry paper and creating a superficial bond to the board/frame/whatever.

Good luck!

Don't know if it works for cases like this but I like to use Roller glue the most. It isn't wet and you can get many different kinds like permanent, repositionable, removable...

A couple of general observations:

1. Sometimes a tiny drop or two of Elmer's glue on the background (rather than the model) provide enough support to hold a small model.

2. I've used a glue stick with good results. There are many different brands, and most of them are dry.

3. A drop of whole milk can serve as a temporary glue in a pinch.

4. Sometimes you can fatigue the adhesive on a ring of tape or double-sided tape by patting a piece of cloth, furniture, or carpet to partially coat the tape with lint.

5. And - to save the best for last - Hobby Lobby ( and Michaels) have a spray adhesive that is the same as on Post-it Notes. It doesn't show and it is not permanent.

i used super glue when i mounted my one and only model that i ever wanted to mount. one small drop made it stick like anything and you couldnt see the glue afterward.

But yeah hanksimon is right, there is a can of spray adhesive that is labeled permanent/temporary spray adhesive. it all depends on how long you wait after you spray your base and stick your model to it... :D

I'm not sure if roller glue is the same thing, but there are glue dots, available from craft stores or department stores such as Wal-mart (either in the craft or office supply section). They work well for temporarily mounting lightweight models.
