Satoshi Kamiya - Ancient Dragon

Post by meee657 »

Hi everyone!
I just finished my first dragon with this tutorial (which is great by the way!) and I have a picture, so please tell me how I went. :D

I think this belongs in the "Origami galleries" section.

But I'll give it a go:
You have folded very nicely, but the paper isen't very good.
I recommend a thin strong, not foil paper.

I agree with Axel but wouldn't know enough to say why... so glad it was said! I would be more like: that paper isn't right but the model is otherwise great. I'd say the head, tail (unless the angle is messing with me on the tail) and wings are spot-on for a dragon... the legs are a bit short/stubby but not bad and not sure on the neck. At the angle I see, it kind of looks long but not a whole lot long. I'd say out of all the dragon models out there that I've seen, this one is up there with the best, though. I think I've only seen about a handful of really good dragon models.

not in general... the best thread would the "what have your folded lately" thread. but as long as you only want to show a single folding, it surely doesn't belong into the galleries.

no offense, but you used a HORRIBLE paper for this model. personally i don't like how it turned out (though i bet most everything i make is worse) i can tell that your folds were very accurate, but using foil on just about any of Kamiya's models is a bad idea in my opinion... if you were to redo this with a better paper (anything BUT foil. origamido would most likely be the best) then i say that it would look amazing.
i think what happened was the it got too thick the shape around the feet and stuff. that happened to me when making his Hercules Beetle with tracing-foil...bleh. i turned it into a bug-that-got-hit-by-a-windshield pretty damn quick after i finished.
EDIT: you did do awesome on the head though.

Thanks for the feedback!
I agree that the paper wasn't the best, I didn't have anything else. Would you recommend a piece of tant paper for this?

Tant is a very thick and heavy paper, for the Ancient dragon it is one of the worst papers I could imagine. What you are looking for is something thin and crisp like for example double MC paper (two layers of tissue paper glued together with methyl cellulose).

Okay, origamido it is then. Lucky that they had a sheet in stock, I ordered an orange sheet.
Also, is it possible for me to relocate this thead in the gallery section?

i was thinking something like that. Kamiya did say though that Origamido is the best paper for his models, but that stuff is very expensive. i still need to get ahold of some mc.

Origamido For Da Win. your only option, without saying. models like that almost come with a sign that says: fold me with origamido or I'll break your fingers.

it's odd that people would recommend origamido for the ancient dragon, actually. it's true that kamiya used origamido, but he made it himself (so he could make the square, or request it as large as he likes it).

if you're going to splurge on an expensive paper for this model, you might as well go with ogami. besides a much broader selection in colors, you'll also get a larger square. with the deckle edge, at most, you will get 41.25 cm from any of the available origamido, so your final product will lack stature (you will get 50 cm for sure from ogami). but even that's kind of small.

overall you're probably better off searching for something that can give you a larger square. it seems many folders have had good results with the pacon fadeless. i believe that's $10/roll, and you'll never need to buy another. any ancient dragon made from a square less than 50 cm a side is probably more properly named "little dragon" or "cutie pie dragon."
