How do you diagram such an object? Why would you teach a beginner wetfolding and shaping immediately? Personally I would teach a beginner something 2D, not something with curved folds.
It seems that you are the opposite of a fan of Giang Dinh. All his model are expertly shaped with lifelike curves. Simplicity is beauty.

GreyGeese, as a whole the origami community likes to idolize Akira Yoshizawa. They say that he is the origami master. His contributions to the art are quite significant, most notably the diagramming system. He also came up with the concepts of wetfolding, and backcoating. Personally I don't see what's so great about a lot of his designs. Sure he could make anything he wanted, and came up with many thousands of designs, but only about 20 of those were good.

And Cupcake, I'm not a huge fan of Giang Dinh's work either. Some of it is really nice, like his sleeping dog, but I don't like his humans that much.

And the thing about folding without specific guidelines. I think that is important. Guidelines means creases, and creases means that the surface won't be completely clean and crease-free.

I was giving this some thought while folding last night. If I have done only landmarked, geometic folding and ended up with something that looks almost like the finished model except for one or two minor, optional shaping steps, I consider that a successful design.
Conversely, If the geometric part is finished and several complex shaping steps are required before the model is recognizeable, I consider that an unsuccessful design.
