Model suggestions

My boyfriend's birthday is coming up, and I'd like to fold something for him as a gift. I am probably a somewhat high intermediate folder, but stubborn enough to try harder models as well. I've not yet tried CP's.

He is a traditional geek; DaD, LotR, Star Wars, videogames and such. He is also a big history buff.

I hope some of you are willing and able to come with ideas.
And hopefully I've provided enough info on the giftee, if not, please ask.

Kawahata's Yoda is a good choice in this case

Andssl hit the nail on the head. I often fold Kawahata's Yoda for senior students who do especially well on tests - they love them. The diagrams are freely available online and it can be readily folded from a 20 cm square (I've had good results with as small as 12 cm square). I highly recommend wet folding (I use elephant hide or tant) as this will give a long lasting, solid, model.

I actually folded the Yoda a while ago. I used a 15 cm square, and it came out quite good. I can imagine it could look great wetfolded and with some nicer paper. It's a great suggestion.
But... He has already seen the model. I'd much rather like to surprise him rather than enhance on something he has already seen.
I'll consider rethinking that though. Thank you!

Another model I tried was Eileen Tan's Balrog, but apart from the diagram being very obscure, I'm not that fond of the finished model. (I know the creator is a member. Sorry!)

Any other ideas?

These models are easy and I belive you can fold from 15 cm square

if he is a fan of D&D, takashi hoyjo's wizard is a great model. any dragon is also nice. my favorite "intermediate" dragon is bob neale's (though i guess it falls in the "simple" side of intermediate). obviously, kamiya's wizard is modeled off of the LotR Gandalf, but paper choice is important and it is a bit on the complex side.

The Star Wars site has some fun models. I'll try some of those.

That wizard by Hojyo Takashi is amazing though! I wonder if I would be able to fold it.
Apparently the diagram is in Tanteidan Magazine 109. I've seen these magazines mentioned a lot of times, though I'm not sure what they actually are. How would I go about buying that specific issue? Can I get it as a PDF-file or similar?

you can buy tanteidan with paypal now. you would have to buy the whole volume, which is $60, i believe.

a cheaper suggestion would be the jun maekawa devil. you can get an english copy of "genuine origami" for ~ $30, i believe.
