Hey everyone...

So I made a video to share some of my advice which will hopefully help you guys out. I have noticed that when a lot of people fold models out of tissue foil there finished model is scattered with silver edges. Now I am going to be plain honest and say that models with silver edges generally look rubbish as the silver takes away from the final look of the model. So I made a video showing how I hide the silver edges. Hopefully it will come in handy and will help make your tissue foil models more presentable...

Very helpful, cheers! The little details can make all the difference to a finished model. Mind if I ask what kind of tissue you favour? The stuff I have wrinkles the minute it touches the glue.

Thank you so much! This helped me a lot even though i dont fold insects. I have a problem. Whenever i make tissue foil with tissue on both sides, the shiny side of the foil gives me trouble. Regardless of how much glue i use, the tissue just refuses to stick properly. Is this normal or is it because of the foil i am using?

Maybe you should try a different kind of glue. Some wallpaper glues specifically tell that they work with aluminium wallpapers, I guess those should work better. What I found to be a problem is when I touch the foil with my fingers that the glue doesn't adhere. So maybe handling the foil with gloves only could help. Anyway don't use more glue, less is better.

I use Solvite Wallpaper glue. It has MC content. The problem is only the shiny side acts difficult, the dull side sticks with no problem.

Maybe someone knows of a household chemical that might take the shine off. I've tried scale cleaner and citric acid with no obvious results...maybe caustic soda or brick acid would do it. Just remember to wear your science goggles!

Chemical treatments could employ lemon juice or white vinegar, both are reasonably potent acids. I suspect scuffing it would half adhesive properties, though taking a scotch brite pad to a piece of aluminum foil might be a bit tricky.

I use bookbindersglue for my tissuefoil. It is white glue diluted with water. I use a small paintroller to make the tissuefoil. I've never had any problems with the shiny side not sticking.
So I suggest using a different type of glue.

Before starting to treat your foil with any possibly harmful chemicals you should definitely try out other kinds of glue. There are glues that stick pretty well even to the shiny side of the foil. Metylan Ovalit T is just one of them.

Yeah, sorry, shouldn't really be encouraging anything irresponsible. Caustic soda can be pretty nasty!
I use "school glue" (washable PVA) by the way. It sticks well to both sides of the foil but makes the tissue quite transparent (hence my attempts to dull the shiny side) and its pretty brittle at the edges.

Your welcome! Um... the tissue paper that I've used vary's as I get mine from all different types of shops... Because 1 shop doesn't sell all the colours I want so I have to by different brands that do. But I do notice that different brands can work slightly differently... not sure why but maybe its because they are a different gsm. I'm also not sure if the brands I buy are available in your country. I think the wrinkling problem may also have more to do with the way you are attaching the tissue to the foil. If you are placing the tissue on by hand its very very difficult to place it on smoothly. I recommend using a cardboard tube (any type of long cylinder will do) to tightly wrap the tissue around. Then you just roll the tissue on the foil and it comes out straighter and smoother. Might take a couple of tries to get the hang of it. Good luck

Your welcome! Yeah you don't have to use this technique on only insects... I just used it as an example. But it will work with any box-pleated flap and even with some non box-pleated flaps. Its interesting because even when I make single sided tissue foil I still glue the tissue to the shiny side. Mainly because I don't want the shine on the visible side. I've never had any problems with the tissue not sticking to the foil... I can't give much advice on what glue to use because the first spray glue I tried worked quite well for me and I haven't used anything else... I wouldn't say its because of the foil you are using as foil is made pretty much the same way everywhere... Tissue papers are made differently depending on what brand you buy but I would agree with everyone else here and say that your problem lies in the glue. And I also strongly agree with Anna in saying that you definitely shouldn't try treating your foil with harmful substances. So definitely try other glues: The stuff I use is this...

Ah, the irony...
Thanks for the advice, though. May try spray adhesive because even with a cardboard tube the tissue wrinkles all over its surface, like its expanding in all directions. Could be the water content of my glue mix, perhaps
