Version names

How do version names work?
For example, the ryujin has 1.2, 2.1, or 3.5.
Are they randomly named?

My understanding is that it’s similar to computer software versions. Integer differences denote a change in overall structure or grid number, while decimal changes are for more minor changes in the model.
After the fall, we rise.
