And I have a problem. I am trying to make the Kawasaki rose for a friend for Valentines day and well ... I only have a week left. I have been at it for a week or so and I cant get past the 9th step. Could someone please walk me through it? I would love you if you did. Thanks!

thanks for the link! When i went to that site and looked at the steps i noticed that they looked nothing like the steps i had gotten when i downloaded a .pdf file of the directions off of origami.com. Why is that?

If i can't make this rose, are there any other easy, good looking roses? How hard, for a good origami folder, is the kawasaki rose?

also, since i saw another thread about this, what type of paper should i use? i now use just plain notebook paper to practice on, but after several steps, i can barely see the creases from a couple steps back.

your trouble with the rose is typical for people trying it for the first time. I see you are looking at the rose from Origami.com. This is only on of the several variations of the K-rose.
Step 9 on the origami.com variation is just a simple pre-crease step
The following steps 17-the end are usually where the problems come from.
As far as an easier rose is concerned check out my diagrams of a rose at http://www.themountainfold.com click on the origami How-To section. I have included a video that will help with a hard step.

there are at least two different diagrams and/or versions for the kawasaki rose. the best one for me was the diagram from "Origami for the Connoisseur". from this diagram I folded my first successful rose clear and easy precreases (different from Winson Chans horrible version).

They show a method for folding the Kawasaki rose featured in Origami for the Connoisseur. (Although for some reason - possibly just by accident - the guy has mirror-imaged it.) These instructions give an easier way of doing the twist fold than the one shown in OftC.

The rose diagrammed by Winson Chan (usually called the new Kawasaki rose) is difficult, and I imagine it would be a nightmare for an origami beginner to fold. The diagrams given for it in the new Kawasaki book (Origami Dream World 2: Flowers and Animals) are far clearer and give a much faster folding method. It's still quite tricky though.

thanks alot for the help everyone. i will let you know how it turns out. As far as paper goes, what should I use. Something that is relatively easy to get would be better. I live on a university so getting art supplies shouldnt be hard.

his rose is the OFTC rose I believe, I suggest learning with regular paper. for you, if you begin to lose sight of the creases you made in earlier steps, then use a pen and write them on the sheet of paper
People say that the curvyness of the rose cant be attained with regular typing paper or kami. But I have folded some pretty nice looking roses using regular paper so I kind of contest this argument, but for the sake of those people may I suggest making some tissue foil, or paper foil ( http://snkhan.co.uk/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=154 ) here is a link on how to make it.

I thought you could reverse engineer from the one I would send you ... but I guess that's not possible since you're in the US.

The Link Johns' given to you is fantastic - that version of the Kawasaki rose is simpler, and I find more beautiful.

The paper I would recommend is Elephant Hide (or sometimes known as Rustik). Canson paper and regular kami work fine too.

Please let us know what steps you're getting stuck at, it may probably be the twist fold or the final cylinder formation steps of the model.

your're so right
I sometimes do this at hard models. from time to time I also use a ruler to determinate reference points, just to save creases. if you've folded a model successful once, it is usually easier to fold it once more (and then without ruler and/or pen).
it's also a good suggestion to use a paper with different coulours on each side, because the diagrams sometimes (mostly?) are better to understand and to follow when you'r model has the same dual colour structure.
