I've been at different posts involving MC and have it all figured out except where to purchase it. None of the craft/book stores near me seem to carry it.

I would just like to know a reliable place online that sells mc that everyone uses. I can find them myself but am a little hesitant to make a purchase without someone's recommendation.

So if you purchase your MC online, please tell me where and what(as in kind).

Looks like they still carry it. I purchased the 1lb jar in 2004 and I still have plenty.

A craft or book store doesn't seem like the right place for me to buy methyl cellulose. I've got mine (Metylan Normal) in a hardware store. It is sold as wallpaper glue there. I have heard that you can also get it in pharmacies since it is used as thickener in cosmetics and food.

I also found this:

at my parent's house, working down in my dad's woodshop, I noticed a can of "spray starch" he uses to make his work shirts press flat and stiff. I looked at the ingredients list, and lo and behold- besides water and propellant, the main ingredient was none other than Sodium Carboxymethyl Cellulose.

I tested it out on paper- sprayed it with the stuff (called "Magic Sizing") and ironed it flat using a normal clothes iron (use a sheet of linen or other smooth thin cloth between your iron and the paper or you'll get starchy stuff all over the iron. yuck.)

it makes for VERY flat and smooth paper, but very springy and strong. it's a joy to fold. and there's really not much waiting for it to dry, as it takes about 3 minutes to really soak in, and then about 2 or 3 minutes to iron it flat and dry.

the best part? the stuff in the spray can cost about $1, and it's a big can!

I got mine from Preservation Equipment Ltd. £16 for 1kg. Based in the uk.

They sell little containers of it, with instructions for making it. One container usually makes 4-5 pieces of double tissue, with a little left over for shaping.
The best part? its only $2.75 per container!

Four to five pieces? How much do you use for one sheet? The box looks as if you could make a lot more, giving that you only need a tablespoon on a cup of water and a cup lasts for several sheets.

That container only has a tiny bit of MC in the bottom, you mix the solution in the container. It makes a little more than a cup i think. I drench the sheets in MC, and I use alot for shaping too.

Well, in that case it sounds very expensive to me. The one I use is 125g per box and a box is about 5€. We are two folders that use double MC paper regularly and still haven't emptied our first box in about three years.

I guess with shipping that would translate to about $13. Now that you mention it, $2 is a little expensive for only 5 pieces of paper...

I use a place called paper source. Comes in a premeasured cup so all you do is add the water. I bought mine about 4 months ago total came to $8 with shipping and I still haven't even made a noticeable dent in mine.
