Creating an origami model from scratch

I was trying to fold the ancient dragon when I stopped and thought "how does he come up with these things". Anyone know? Also, for those of you who have created your own origami designs, how did you go about it.

my boxpleated models - for instance - grew from kawasaki's frog. the devil should have been a paper copy of a art nouveau brass sculpture. the geisha and the josh bear were results of playing with grids ...

Experimentation, really. I try some folds I haven't done before until it looks like something, and then I go from there. Then as I'm trying to improve an existing model, I discover something else. Then as I'm trying to improve something else, I discover something else, etc. etc. Building upon or altering existing models is a big part of designing.
