All of them have a basic layout of a frog base or other 8 pointed base with a full border graft for the head, toes, wings, and tail.
I personally know that my design was inspired by Go Guspath's Golden Drake, whose cp I can't find anymore and Poliste's dragon was inspired by mine. Yet the others as far as I know the others have been developed independently. Thoughts?

It's a logical result, it's a simple and well-known base which, as you say, has the correct amount of main points, which is the starting, well, um, point - and grafts result in the extra details
Interesting to see that even though they are all very similar, not one of them can be folded flat without adding additional creases (or taking some away). Part of the reason people have such trouble folding from crease patterns is that they are often not drawn completely/correctly. Designers should take the time to depict their models accurately...
That was off topic, but I thought I'd say something anyway. I mean no offense. Just my 2cents.
Being one of those designers, I've seen these patterns popping up every now and then and keeping silent. Kind of makes me feel like I lack creativity.
And Jason, I personally don't think you need all the hinge creases added if the the orientation of the flaps is easy to figure out. I like to see them in a CP, but I don't have the patience/skill to draw them myself. Also, I was about 13 back when I drew that pattern.
