Thanks for all the comments (and crits
) Sure the newer version may have lost a little bit of that simplistic elegance, but the shape of it now comes a lot closer to resembling that of the real bird, which was my aim.
@ QTrollip - It's true, paper does make a huge difference. I'm going to either try tissue foil, or something Bernie Peyton suggested to me; a sheet of tissue backcoated onto some canson art paper, then wet folded. Maybe I'll do both!
@ Jonnycakes - I'm glad you like the wings I wasn't sure if they were a bit overdone so this kind of feedback is nice!
@ TheRealChris - I can try reworking the simple version a bit, just for fun, and see if I can get it a little closer to the real thing

Well, its time that I bring this thread back from the grave again. This time I actually have something more worthwhile. I finally finished designing my blackbird, and have folded my fist decent copy of it out of Korean Hanji. I also have a few other designs and they can all be found on my flickr at http://www.flickr.com/photos/rdudevr55/
Here is one picture of my blackbird

(I read through some of the help on the forum and still can't figure out how to make that last link just show up as an image.

Terrific progress ! I like the shaping and the hungry pose.
The tail at this angle is not as clear as some of the pictures in your gallery.
I don't understand why the tail is up, rather than more horizontal ?
Now that you have shaped it so well, is the design flexible enough to pose in different configurations - Tail down, head up ; wings out like flying; head pointing to one side ?
Great work !

Thanks for the comments everyone!
@ HankSimon - I chose to put the tail up in this rendition, because it is like that in the photo that I used as inspiration to help design this model. I have also seen them do that when they land or are about to take off. The design should be flexible enough to manipulate into various positions; the one I think I'm going to try next is having it perched on the side of a cattail. I don't know if the wings are large enough to give a decant flying rendition, but I may try to eventually render a common mating pose that these birds often strike, with their wings slightly outstretched and their tail fanned out.

Thanks for the complements and suggestions! Anna I am planning on eventually diagramming this, and I will send you a copy for sure, but I want to see if I can add those toes for Jared first! I used a grafted fish base to get the back legs and tail, the front legs and throat flap come from a bird base which connects the extra strips that give the back legs their toes. I'll see if I can add toes on the front legs without sacrificing the length of the legs and making the front of the model any thicker than it is. I'm going to try to whip up a decent crease pattern soon, and maybe you guys will have an idea of how to go about the front toes
