try using a pen/pencil and a ruler to mark out the creases before folding
"the first step towards failure is trying"

O-O
In what case are these diagrams misleading and bad. You need to learn what bad diagrams look like.

Anyways, loganorigami pointed out a very useful technique for learning mdoels such as this one. Mark out your creases (and not just the new ones, but every single crease used in the model), fold the lines in the directions (mountain/valley), and try to do the squares first. Also might help to know if you are on stage I, II, III, or IV. As that would narrow it down to either 1 of the four step 13/14s there are in this model's diagrams.

Bad diagram for gecko and the fly on the wall? Do you really mean that excellent diagram? Are you serious? If you cannot fold it after this diagram, fold steamboat instead.
