My advice is to follow the mountain valley pattern as best as you can, the circle packing won't help here...trust me.

Is it very unusual? I'm interested in the square/river packing more from an analytical perspective than a practical one. I'm trying to understand the structure based on what I've learned in Dr. Lang's book. (I don't necessarily intend to fold a Dorothy). But, either this CP obeys different rules, or else it's a shifting maze of rivers.

Which book? If you are basing it off of the first one (mainly the simplified version of the newest one), then the idea is similar to the train in the box pleat section. It still follows all of the rules of origmi (of course, it's satoshi!!!). But it is very hard to understand off of a plain, even with circles, crease pattern alone. By my experience, take your time. Start with the legs and work up is my opinion. It is just a 1000 piece jigsaw puzzle for folders. I love making it, but have no time anymore since I got a job. When I do get a chance, however, I will post pics on how I make her.
