Origamania Human Base + Gorilla
Hello everyone,
I'm new to the forum and to origami as well. I've been folding for a few weeks now and am starting to get a little bit better.
Recently, I came upon Lionel's free book Origamania and tried to fold the Gorilla. However, I'm already stuck at the human base. Could someone please explain how step 13 in the base is supposed to work? I don't see anything inside that flap I could pull out and just mountain folding the triangle/flap doesn't get anywhere near the figure displayed in step 14.
Thanks for any suggestions

What you need to do there is to "change the color" of the paper. In other words, to unwrap what is shown at that step.
Focus on that white triangle at the bottom of the model. You see the edge of the model on the white part? You need to reverse that crease. The result will be the same shape, but the triangle will have changed its color.
Get it? If not just keep asking, there are many people here eager to help.

After letting this model rest for a while I gave it a new try today. I did succeed in finishing the human base now (experience does pay off after allBrimstone wrote:Get it? If not just keep asking, there are many people here eager to help.

However, the head is giving me a major headache. I'm talking about steps 23-27 on page 16 of Origamania here. Step 23 looks like a standard sink fold, but step 24 is a bit mysterious to me and at step 25 I'm totally lost.
At step 24 am I correct, that the large top to bottom valley fold means, that one arm and foot at the top are folded towards those at the bottom? Then what does the small arrow coming out of the triangle created by the two small valley folds mean?
In step 25 I don't have any paper to pull out of the inside and if I valley fold the outermost layer it is pulling along the layer in the back and all layers in-between. With everything I tried I never ended up at anything remotely close to what's shown in step 26.
Any help on those steps is very much appreciated.

Step 23 you are right, just a sink.
Step 24 is still about the head not the arms and feet. Just fold the head in half and at the same time bring down the tringle at the top (it is shown sideways but you should have it pointing up since it is a head, you get the idea). Rememebr to repeat the same procedure on the other side.
Now you should have the paper you need to perform step 25.
Keep trying, you are getting close.

I'm not sure what you mean with the top triangle. Maybe some photos help a little bit:
This is what I have after step 23:

I assume that the triangles are the ones at the left and right which go inside. When I fold the model in half and bring those triangles down it looks like this (just before closing it):

Is this correct? If so I still don't understand what's happening in step25.

No wonder you are having problem with those diagrams, they are very inaccurate.
That is not exactly a sink fold. I know I said it was but I hadn't folded the model, I was just interpreting the diagrams in my head.
Step 22:

Step 23: Look at the front of the model (the gorilla's chest), turn that crease into a mountain

Bring the tip of the head's flap down while spreading the sides

Now you should be at step 26

Thanks for trying, but somehow I still don't get it. I think that I reached the point of your next to last photo.

Is this correct so far? Then I don't see how you get to the next step. I am especially having trouble identifying the rectangular area for the main part of the head.

In my opinion it is folded a little bit different than the version Brimstone shows in his pictures. Here is what I have come up with:
This is what you should have in step 22

Fold the arms over to the right

Open sink the top (take a bit less than I have done to get a longer head)

Bring two opposite triangles down like in the following picture

In side view should look like this

Valley fold the back flap downwards

Side view

Close the model back up again by bringing the arms to the left

The finished gorilla
