Some scaled Goldfish?

Post by JumPurge »

alright, so I bought the book "Origami Goldfish" by Ronald Koh.

Looking at them, I think they'd look adorable with some scales. I don't think any of them have a CP to add to, or any version to do so :<

Is there a way to add scales into diagrams from scratch?

Or does anybody know of a scaled goldfish? The only scaled fish I know of are some Coelacanths, ironically, the dollar koi and Robert's Koi :/ Oh and those MerLions, but they're only half fish. P:

I'm not sure if this belongs here, but I think it does, because it has to do with Ronalds models and putting in some diagrams. 8-[

Two goldfish that you can quickly see now and judge if you can add scales to them >:

the adding of scales or fingers is a simple grafting problem
if you would like to add some scales to these goldfish you should try it first with dr langs technique

and to get the crease pattern just fold the origami you like and unfold it, take the biggest creases from the base and that is your crease pattern, now you will have to do your homework adding the scales of your choosing, scaling them (as in calculating the area and lenght of the folds) and graft them in the appropriate places of the CP.
now fold it and show it to us in here
jaja
hope it helps

Um~ I'm not a mathimitician.
So whatever Dr. Lang says is just a completely different language some times.
And I'm trying to read that, but it just doesn't make sense. The models in the book, for example, are not exactly how Robert Lang does things, the way I see :/ He's stuff is all shapes and what not, where you can just cut and add. I don't see the same sort of shaping in Koh's models.

EDIT: I just tried this method on one fish. It crossed too much into the other parts of the fish, particularly the head.

Fold the fish you want, colour the parts where you would like the scales, unfold the model and look where you need to insert them.

I have used anna's method several times for koi, although i have never got round to making one properly with decent scales since the sheer number of scales is a bit daunting for me

just to add my unwanted $0.02--

i'm not sure scales would add much to them (in fact, i honestly think they would detract). if one goes through madrigal's flickr, you'll notice there aren't a ton of super complex models (if any). instead, there is a strong emphasis on paper choice and excellent folding, breathing life into the final product.

aesthetically, personally, i prefer the mabona koi to the complex scaled lang version. the scales are not the most important feature of the koi in life; it's their grace in the water and distinct colorations.

I agree. The scales make the model look cool, but the right colored paper provides a much nicer artistic model.

Also, in the time it takes to add the scales, you might fold 4 fish in different colors without scales.

No, I think Langs Koi is just bad, to be brutally honest. P:

@origami_8:
That is basically Langs method simplified -x- and it really doesn't work on Koh's goldfish. It's a crane base basically. Two sides get folded int the visible body, and excess makes the fins, the front makes the head, and the back is connected to more paper used to make the back fins and tail.

Doing the criss cross method interrupts with the head too much it would seem, and normally, the head is smooth. :/ I can understand how used to this method one would be, but really, it's not helping a lot x-x;
