I am having a problem understanding what to push and fold in diagram 17.

Pretty much just stuck at step 17.

Not sure if there's an official name for that maneuver, but I think of it as a spread squash.

Beginning with the model laid out as in step 17, the first thing I do is make a valley fold upwards where the mountain fold is indicated. I make a very heavy crease there and then unfold. Then what you do is fold only the top layer of the pocket (where the big white arrow is pointing) up on the valley fold indicated in the diagram. What ends up happening is some paper stretches out between the top layer of that mountain fold and the layer underneath (which doesn't move during the fold). That is the vertical line you see running across the diagram in 18.

Another way to think of it is everything above the mountain line in the picture becomes a lower layer and everything below it becomes an upper layer.

awesome i got it! Now i am stuck on 23-24. I will show picks once i get through it. The diagrams really made it super simple.
