A Variation of Kamiya's Unicorn

I was doing some browsing, just having fun. When I came across this.
http://vuongquocgiay.to-relax.net/t1498 ... y-cua-nang
Figured "normal thread of somebody showing off what they do, a pretty awesome rendition of Kamiya's Ryuzin for example. Then I kept looking and saw he made Kamiya's Unicorn... look really epic ;-;
It made me desperate D:
I have a copy of Satoshi Kamiyas book (both, actually

) and the unicorn CP is in there. It says in the book more flaps can be added, and the thread says something about Robert lang, I assume that has something to do with all the grafted scales.
If anybody is able to work it out, I would literally pay ._.;; Because I got jack.

I'm posting this at school right now, and so I can't see the pictures, but I think I know what Satoshi means about adding extra flaps. I'm pretty sure you would need to add a border graft along the leading edges of the square to the same proportions as the mane portion is to the model (don't have the book in front of me). The head flaps would be shifted to the new corner, and the extra flaps in the mane would be done a la the Atlantic Purple Sea Urchin.

the main problem in this one is adding scales - grafting scale pattern to 22.5 model. i think that adding those will provide us much extra paper, which can be used to make flames on legs and the mane. the whiskers are probably added in RZ style.
here's a photo of the model we are talking about
I'll try to work it out, but for at least two weeks i won't have ANY time - so there won't be any fast solution

You might want to have a look at the Scaled Wyvern by Chad Killeen. I don't have the CP in front of me, but it's essentially 22.5deg pleating with scale grafts. Again, I can't see the picture, but I'm pretty sure that's how I would do it.

I barely know how these things would work x-x
gawd I wish I knew how to work these things D:

A couple op weeks ago I was looking for something interesting to design. So I just went to Wikipedia and looked at everything in the mythical beings section. You should search for kirin and qilin. Doesn't really help you to get the scales but it nice to see what the creature is!

As I'm looking at what I can find on the "scaled kirin," that would be possible with the scale-pleating I mentioned earlier. Just add half a blintzed frog base or so (however much the border graft allows, and transfer the 22.5deg folds into scales (ie the head-scale connection in the Ryujin). Fix the proportions, and you should be set.

my head is full of what
I was just hoping somebody could help with drawing the CP... I have no idea how to graft them on and change it completely for this D:
A Kirin is basically a unicorn dragon thing.
It was actually a giraffe, which were originally called camel-leopards (thinking a camel stole a leopards patterns). Some things got lost in historical telephone, and the spots became scales, and things became more awesome.

Let me try to explain what I'm thinking of:
-Take the unicorn CP as-is.
-Add a border-graft along the leading edges (head, mane, forelegs). The graft should be the same width as the head.
-Remove the original head creases and shift them to the new corner created by the graft. Fill the empty space with bird or fish bases.
-he scales will be a bit more difficult; I'm not sure how worthwhile it would be to actually do it. Take the scale pattern from Ryujin and somehow fit that into the graft, or simply pleat like the Scaled Koi. The part I'm worried about is the extra pleats that make their way out from the scales. Those could maybe be hidden, but it would be difficult to do so, screw up the references, and shift almost every other crease in the model.
The easiest solution would be to go a la the Scaled Koi and pleat everything, fold the scales, then fold the unicorn from the pleated sheet.

folding from a pleated sheet is a bad idea.
i'm thinking about ways like in scaled wyvern.
also, as far as i see, the body isn't scaled, it has rows - not scales. only the neck is scaled, and neck isn't from edge of the sheet, is it? so we have alot more fun.
about flames on legs, i think an extra graft on the edge pulled in right place would work.

That's why I've never done the Scaled Koi--that, and that I'm too lazy to find references.
Like I said, I can't see the picture. The neck on Kamiya's unicorn is not from the edge of the paper, so the Wyvern idea is feasible. The kicker is all the other pleats that come from the edges, unless you can terminate them in a bird-base-like structure.

try to open the picture only, it would help you alot - and it isn't very big, less than 40 kb - downloading it on a phone or with slow internet shouldn't be a great problem.

That reminds me of Eric Josiel's mermaid, now that I see the pic. The layers seem to be concentrated around the shoulders, with some more around the hips, so I think it may be that kind of structure (a border-graft that transitions into scale pleats). I'm not about to draw the CP, but it's probably doable.
