Shuki Kato - Western Dragon

Post by Aoduen »

Hi, I am really having trouble at steps 70 and 71, can anyone please explain how I would handle these folds better? My paper is really crumpled there from my failed attempts and getting really hard to make a good fold.

Also, I am using regular origami paper. Should I start over and use a better quality paper?

Tadashimori has a tutorial up here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qKbOV-uR5Fg (should be around the 40 minute mark)
Diagrams from Shuki's Flickr here: http://www.mediafire.com/?islvwflo76ksx82

My apologies in advance if I did something wrong, this is my first post and I checked to see if there were any topics on this model and I didn't see one.

Origami paper (I'm assuming kami?) is a bit weak for complex folding, such as this dragon. I'd say try to finish the model so that you're familiar with the model's folds without wasting more paper if it's possible (a test fold, in other words), and then try using a better paper.
Oh, and you posted fine I believe--welcome to the forum~ :D

From the sound of it, you are using small weak origami paper that is becoming further weakened by a certain step you can't get just right. I would offer photos, but you already have a video so I cant be of much help there. Considering your paper choice I would not expect a perfect rendition, but like Flame_Kurosei said finishing what you have started will be very beneficial.
I'm assuming the accordion folds are what's giving you trouble. If those aren't perfect don't fret too much over it. It will be mostly hidden within the model. The only part I would worry about too much are the pleats that make the claws and fingers. Make sure those line up nicely and I wouldn't worry about much else in that step.
Best of luck!

Yes, I am using kami. I recently ordered a few sheets of Nicolas Terry's tissue foil and some tant paper, which of those do you recommend? I was planning this one as a test fold because I never had some something this complex. Also, I was worried whether or not if I skipped that fold it would mess up the model, but by what Raptorex55 said I guess I can sloppily do it and hope for the best.

Thank you for welcoming me to the forum, and thank you for the insight. :)

What size paper are you using? Larger paper is probably better for folding this model. I have it right now on my computer but I can't fold it because I have pretty small kami only.

30 x 30cm kami, but I think my tissue foil is only 15 x 15cm. Think it is too small? I am really looking forward to folding this model and getting stuck at one part is killing me.

I think it might be too small for such a complex model, tissue foil or not, considering how weak the 30cm kami folded. I recommend a much larger sheet.

Thank you so much for the help, I am going to refold the whole thing, get some better paper, and take all of your advice into account. Hopefully I'll be able to finish it. :)

Bigelowlqebc & liantiyiay: Hey... Aren't you just copy-pasting parts of my comment into another comment. There is something suspicious going on around here.

Yes, now that you point it out, you're right raptorex! I wonder why?

Searching through both of their posts, it would seem as though anything they posted was copied from someone else's previous comment. Should someone bring this up to a mod or leave it be?

Working on this model currently. It is one of the most amazing and surprisingly fun folds I've ever done. My mind is consistently blown as I'm folding this. How the hell do you design this stuff? and then come up with such a perfect folding sequence?
