Hello, this is my first post in this forum, my name is Sina and I'm from Toronto Canada.

Really hoping someone can help me out with finishing Dahila by Maarten Van Gelder. Here is a link to the instructions: http://www.scribd.com/doc/7066919/Origami-Dahlia .
I have reached the last step (STEP 12) but can't figure out how to overlap the flaps to get the final shape. Hoping someone has done this or some experts are out there who can help me out.

So to be specific, step 12 says
"Center: left flap behind right flap.
Left end overlaps right end for 2/16.
Repeat behind; very difficult"

Check step 10 again, what you do on the right hand side needs to be folded and then unfolded (that's what the double arrow means and you left it folded).

The mopdel starts by dividing the paper in 16ths, to close the model you need to overlap 2 of those sections. I don't know if this is clear, but to shape the final model do as you would if you had a book and you were looking at the spine of a book and you opened the pages with both your hands and brought the cover and back cover together.

oh but step 11 says to squash open the triangle on the right side , then do a mountain fold so that point x goes between the flaps. Also there is a cross arrow which means it should be repeated (right?), so I folded one more layer. OR does the cross arrow mean I have to do the same on the opposite side.

Good analogy!, but this is hard . The twisting folds from step 8-9 makes more obscure.
Should I actually open up the flaps before folding? when I open the flaps (like book covers as you mentioned, the center gets locked. but the instruction says left flap behind right flap.

It seems as though step 7 is inside reverse folds, step 8 is outside reverse folds, and step nine is inside reverse folds. All the creases should be there. None of the pictures you gave us show you doing the inside/outside reverse fold zig zag pattern, hence the reason you can't just open the model to tuck the flaps in.
