Divisions in Lafosse Alligator?

I'm making Lafosse's alligator, and the diagrams say to divide both diagonals into 128ths, then pleat. However, looking at the photodiagrams, it seems as though there are double the amount of scales compared to what i made. I know for a fact that I divided and pleated properly, yet they seem to have more scales, so is it a misprint in the book, or did they just go double with their divisions?

one more thing, what would the best kind of paper be to make it again? right now i have butcher paper and sort of like "normal" paper, but seeing how as it ends up 9x the starting thickness, it's getting quite tough to fold. any links?

I tried and spectacularly failed once, so I can't tell you the best paper. But I do believe the 128ths is incorrect and you'll need to do diagonal 256ths - or at least start with complete 128ths and start doing the staggered pleats at the 256ths.
