In the book 'Origami flowers' by Hiromi Hayashi, on page 64:

Anyway, I fail to see how to get to step 8. Can someone please explain? I've had no trouble with other diagrams in this book. This is the first snag and it has been a pain since a few other neat flowers are based off these starting points.

Hm, seems to me that a line (or better circle) is missing. You have to zig-zag-fold on the existing creases (like making an umbrella) while sinking the middle part inside (open sink) . Hope that helps.

I hate it when diagrams are unclear.

I'm trying to fold this model too and find the move from 7 to 8 very difficult. I think I understand the basic logic of the fix that you are suggesting but can't quite visualize it.

Are you saying that the polygon will be mountain folded on its diameter with a valley fold bisecting the polygon about half-way along a radius, and then somehow all the already-created radial mountain and valley folds accordian up to produce the trapezoid that Hayashi claims is the result?

Could you please point me (us) to a diagram of a similar folding solution?

Have you folded the narcissus out of this book yet? It's the same thing, don't fold the flaps in that are on the underneath.

Thanks. I figured it out using the Narcissus as a guide. The problem is that the instructions do not indicate that to create a trapezoid from a hexagon (or polygon) with flaps you need to take flaps at different angles and bring them into matching angles by bringing the outer points of two flaps together while using the creases to push the bottom corners in, creating an accordian effect. The accordian effect lets them site on top of each other neatly but it is unclear that the accordian will work out until you get several flaps together.

I had a really hard time with this at first too.

It seems like a lot of the flowers in the book use the same technique.

This is one of my favorite books and I come back to it often.
