I have a problem with Lang's Surai beetle in Origami Insects 2. Step 3. Where are the reference points? I have no idea what Lang means in this step. There needs to be at least 2 reference points but he does not even show it. So I have no idea how much to fold. It's not even a 45 degree angle so that is out of the question. I love lang diagrams. so confusing

I have not folded this model, but it looks like there are two refence points. For each fold, there is the refence at the existing marks (1/4 marks I presume). Also, the top right and bottom left corners must touch the edge of the paper.
Here's a picture of the fold going top left to bottom right:

thanks. Lang could have mentioned that. I love that way his diagrams are so unclear.

Well actually, it is shown by the folding arrows because it goes from the corner to the edge. But, yes you are right, this is pretty vague and some help in the words for the step would better clarify the step. Good luck with your model! :)

For those who like to measure - it's 1/23 of the side of the square. It's obvious from the CP and confirmed by calculation too.

I don't think Lang's diagrams are unclear at all-that is a vague step, but it is uncharacteristic of Lang to be so vague. I think his diagrams are some of the best, actually (granted I haven't seen too many people's diagrams).

there are some more mistakes and unclarities too, but still it's a great model

I folded it, and it is more complex to be explained in words than to be done.

Let's take the crease going up-left -> down-right. The point on the right is clearly at 1/4 of the side, marked in the previous step. You need to make a crease that passes through it and puts the top-right corner of the square on the bottom (lower) side of the square. Then unfold it.

Hope it is more clear now...
