How do I proceed from step 6 to 7? It seems like I have to unfold everything and invert it since there's a colour change, but I'm not sure.

Do not unfold everything.
You folded frog base from blintz-fold (all corners in the center), so you have two layers of the paper on each part of the frog base. You could say, that outer layer (white) is dressed over the underneath layer. So you must a little bit release the folded frog base and "undress" outer layer, you also turn it inside-out.
Someone else maybe will describe it better due to better English sense.

I have one special suggestion. One of Czech very talented begginer aslo folded this viuda negra and said that it need much more practice and final model is very bad, crumpled etc. She said that she will practice folding on another models before folding it again. Maybe it should be also better way for you.

Actually this model is not so hard concerning the actual folding steps. The important thing with this model is to use the right (very thin) paper.

Thanks Chris I managed to get past that step. Just to clarify, is step 11 a sink? I'll probably continue tomorrow.

Well you gain experience by trying out different models. There's no harm trying to fold a difficult model, it is only through that will you learn things that you can't from simpler models I don't mind trying again if it doesn't work.

Big bold arrow should mean inside reverse fold.

Actually, big bold arrows usually just mean "Push here", so they can be applied for sinks, reverse folds and various other folds.

Finally completed the spider, however it doesn't look really nice at all. If I were to show it to my friends, they would probably think its an octopus

Well, then, that means you folded an octopus! It doesn't have to be what the diagrams say it is.

Actually.. it reminds me more of the facehugger in the aliens movie.

(I've made many attempts at that viuda negra model but still ended up with something that looks like a crumpled sheet with 8 legs )
