Just a general question about folding a complex gridded box-pleated design from CP. I am working on Kamiya's turtle for instance. It has a 56 grid. Do you guys fold the entire grid or just the vertical and horizontal creases you need? The diagnoal creases stand out anyway and for the comprehension of the structure of the model it may be easier to just fold the entire grid. Later, when the model is understood you could stick to teh bare essentials...

My experience is that when you just fold the straight lines you need they very often become off-shift or out of place for a few milimeters causing the entire model to be slightly distorted...

I usually fold the whole grid, because that way I don't have to think where to put creases and where not to put creases, and can fold the grid almost automatically.

Only when it's very obvious I skip some creases, f.e. if the lower part of the square doesn't contain any horizontal creases at all.

As for Kamiya's sea turtle, that's a bit different, since most of the 56x56 grid is only there as reference, so I would probably try to minimize the unnecessary creases.

For an initial folding of a design, i will fold all or most of the grid. Then, when I understand the folding sequence better, I will eliminate unnecessary creases that will appear on the outside of the model as much as possible.

just finished the turtle. I just sticked to the essential creases. Still it's a hard thing to fold, especially when your paper is too puffy like mine was...

On each model there are some unnecessary creases that do not contribute to the finished model, so the more you can avoid them, the better. This of course does not mean that you can sacrifice accuracy on the ones you do need to crease.

Check Lang's Longimanus Beetle from Origami Insects II for instance. This model is based on a 32 x 32 grid but the diagrams instruct you to do only the necessary creases, you do not need to fold the whole grid.

For a purely box-pleated design (not Kamiya's turtle), I usually just fold the entire grid.
When I started folding box-pleated CP's, I took the painstakingly long and tedious path of folding out only the lines I need, and I had them folded for mountains and valleys.
It took way too long. In addition, for Hojyo Takashi's God of Thunder, I folded out exactly the creases I needed, but the guy's skirt/pants actually needed the horizontal creases too, which I didn't have because it wasn't on the CP.
-So, yes I do fold out the entire grid. (You can also change the model easily that way)

Reading about Box-pleated CPs, would you be able to post the 'Part V - Collapsing 3' soon? (of course when time permits). The first 4 parts have been really really helpful and I am waiting for the next part
