use rectangle 1:2 (of course, if you are folding two cranes...)
fold it half (make square)
fold almost whole crane with double-layer paper
unfold completely
cut half of the paper in the right middle (in right direction, try it, its hard to describe it by words)
collapse two bird bases
finish cranes

I don't think it's that easy. The first obvious challenge is to get it done without cutting. But if this is from a single sheet, then there's also the color change to take care of.

It is that easy. I just tried it myself. First I folded the two squares of the 1:2 rectangle into cranes, a white one and a coloured one, that's possible. Then I had to cut one tail and one head apart to be able to fold them upwards. Done.

A second version that works is multi piece. You need two equal sized cranes and a birdbase from a square with half of the width you used for the cranes. Insert one half of the birdbase into a wing of the first crane and the other half into the wing of the second crane. Done.

I will work on a single piece version without cuts.

This is traditional model, I have one Japanease booklet with it. I described diagram from that booklet.

It's pretty direct to get something similar from a blintzed frog base, only without the color change. The cranes share a wing made from the thick center flap.

You can make interesting crane-shapes by this method. Using for example 1:4 rectangle and folding first and last crane one over another, you will get crane-triangle. Or with much more longer strip you can make big crane circle. I am not sure if I have somewhere photo of such model.

*sigh* I'm still so lost at origami when I don't have a diagram. The newbie is showing through again. Would you mind explaining in a little bit more detail how you fold those two cranes?

Do you actually fold two preliminary bases? Because that I couldn't get done as they would have to be on opposing sides due to the color change. Or do you fold it more like a CP-version without actually collapsing (especially the part where the two cranes meet and the fold directions reverse)?

The way Ondrej.Cubulka described it the correct way, according to this origami book I have here. I don't know what the title is but it's full of crane variations. I'll get a pic up soon. I forgot I had it and I just kind of stumbled upon it while rummaging through my collection and noticed the duo-cranes on the cover. The way the diagrams describe it is:

1) Get a 2:1 rectangle, fold in half, then cut/rip that folded line half-way.
2) Fold the rectangle in half, along the crease line made previously.
3) Fold the bird base out of the two-ply square, as if you were folding a single, regular crane. (this is basically the only difference from Ondrej's procedure. I'm just banking on the fact this way it's easier to visualize.)
4) Open the model, peel out half of the model so you now have to joined bird bases. You should have two bird bases, different colors, and you won't have to change the directions of any of the creases.
5) Finish the cranes individually, making sure that when you're finishing them the wings are joined.

I'll post a pic of the bird bases if you need any more help.

Although that probably is the most ideal way of folding it, it really don't like it that much because you have to cut it.

Easy- Start with a 3x1 rectangle and fold each square into a bird base. the middle one acts as a connecter between the two sides so you don't have to cut anything. The two end squares become the birds, and have a much stronger connection than with cutting.

ive made this model many times and have tried to do it without the cut, cant get it to work. and i dont reali think that make it more durable is going to do much as it just sits there. if you use a 4X1 rectangle you can make 4 cranes ive done it ill post some pics when i get home.

but instead of having 1:3 squares, just make 1:2 squares. Haven't really tried it me self, but I will. Sometime.
