Anyone here know if a CP or diagram exists of the turtle on Eric Joisel's site?

Hah, I wish. One of my favorite designs but knowing Joisel's tendency to be secretive with the majority of his designs, I'm not too optimistic about a CP's availability.

However, I don't think it would be all that hard to reverse-engineer it. Higher resolution pics would really make it easier.

I don't now...I'm not so fond of that model. It looks like it got hit by a bus.

Yeah it does doesn't it? All I know is that I couldn't reverse-engineer that to save my life. It's just a shame there's no CP or anything else on it ... the model appeals to me in a weird way ... like a really lazy turtle or something.

I can't imagine that Eric would be willing to give you the CP, he doesn't like other people folding his designs. He is living from his work and thinks that he would get less money if he would share his secrets.

... However, he tends to be fairly nice and helpful with people who are respectful of the Art and of his work. You could try writing him and asking if he will be at the OUSA Conference (that is, if you plan on attending..). He might be willing to share the process of folding the turtle, rather than providing something written down.

But, recognize that he is one a handful of folks around the world who make their living predominantly through Origami. So, just as you wouldn't ask a lawyer or doctor to give you advice for free.... consider that context, regardless of the answer that you get from Eric.

There is hope ... because he has released a few models for general use ...

That's not exactly true. He doesn't like people folding his designs and selling them as their own. It has happened a few times, so it is very understandable if he's reluctant.

Eric does share his secrets. His web site is full of info about his ideas and approach, eg:

It does not look like it got his by a bus. It looks fairly acurate of a tortoise with joisel's cartoonistis face. I love the expression of the eyes and the pattern of the shell. This is one of my favorite origami models....

Even though the shell's plates are arranged in a way that you'd never see on any turtle or tortoise, Joisel sure has a way of applying unique tesselations to various animals and figures. He definitely has some kind of surrealistic approach with his designs, compared to a lot of designers who tend to shoot for a more realitic representation.

And Angrydemon, you criticize an art piece with the words "It looks like it got hit by a bus"?... Just remember, there's people looking at your gallery who don't like your works but have the decency to keep it to themselves and/or give a more constructive/positive critique. It's one thing to note on flaws but that was just plain rude. Try to show a little more respect, especially to someone who undoubtedly has a much more developed artistic ability.

The head and shell are superb, but it still looks a little strange. The legs look pretty odd, but it could very well be the picture. I have a feeling that this model (as do all of them) looks better in person.

It's one thing to get rid of precreases when your patterns are based on two axis, but when you're working with three as with equilateral triangles, it's much more complicated.

Does anyone here know (probably Joseph) where this particular model is being displayed?

Sorry, I don't mean to insult Eric's work. He's one of the greatest origamists in the world and It'll be a long time before I can be as great as him. The shell and body is perfect, but think the legs look a little odd. Everyone is talking about how beautiful and perfect the shell is but nobody has complimented on the legs. I bet if you got hit by a bus your limbs would dislocate from their joints too.

Nobody is perfect. Every model has it's flaws. How can you blindly accept everything as perfect in every way? Everyone is allowed to have their own opinion. I'm a big fan of Eric but that doesn't mean I have to like everything he makes. If I don't like his tortoise, that doesn't mean I'm going to get struck by lightning. Can you criticize vegetarians for not eating meat? Can you criticize gay people for their sexuality? Can you criticize people from third world countries for not getting proper education? Can you criticize the police for putting their lives on the line to protect people they don't even know? NO!!! We were given brains and souls so we can think! So we can make our own choices in life! I get to decide what I like and what I hate! Not YOU !!!

What some of you are implying is that you're not allowed to criticize something unless you can do a better job yourself. Let's say you bought a brand new Mercedes, and the engine breaks down in 5 days. That means, the warranty will be void unless you can assemble a brand new Ferrari from spare parts you found in the junkyard.
