Hi All,

I saw this cute poodle on Jason Ku' website and was hoping if you guys can help me collapsing the CP. Alas! there is no Diagram to fold from. My grandmother and Family are REALLY into poodles and i thought it would make a perfect Gift for her (she just turned 80) so any help would be much appreciated.

I've tried printing out the CP and trying to fold it from there but the middle part kinda gets to me. i Get that the upper left and lower right corners are rabit ears? and that the CP is a grafted cp on the edge of the CP. but thats about it.

This is the first time im seriously trying to figure something out from a cp. I have to say Origami Design Secrets by Robert Lang helped a lot! but i think i still lack experience with the CP so im asking you guys for help. i know when im beat! hehehe!

This crease pattern is a little misleading because when I tried to find the reference lines I assumed one of the major lines in the crease pattern to be a halfway fold. There is no halfway fold in the model though. The line I believed to be halfway is mere millimeters form the half division. If you fold on the wrong line, even off by a few millimeters, it can cause the model to look sloppy.

The middle appears to be sinks, if I am not mistaken. If you are folding them you should do those lines last because they are basically a way of making the model compact.

While when you design, you can add border grafts as an afterthought, they usually must be folded first. So the first thing to do is locate the position of the border graft. It's at 1/8 of the way in. Next is to locate the major lines in the new square. First is to see what happens if we extend kite folds (22.5 degrees) from the corners. The majority of traditional-style CPs will give you some information from this. Turns out that's all we needed for this one. Here's the CP with these references:

Wow you make it look simple jared. I tried a kite fold from the other vertex and got something that seemed pretty plausible. But then I snapped back to reality and realized, "It cannot be that easy for me.". At least I recognized the sinks.

I got the CP collapsed pretty quickly and was planning on posting a quick photo guide but I'm second-guessing my accuracy because I've found it hard to get to the final product from the base. If I make it any farther I'll help you out but I don't want to embarass myself, haha.

This is my first CP. i'm starting to think i'm a little in over my head... just a bit i need to fold more.

Well it's not a bad first CP, but there are easier ones. If you can get flat-folded base, even if it's a wrong variation, I'd still consider it mission accomplished.

First thing I did was start with the grafted pleats on the edges, then get the center done. Below is a hint at what I did with the center, but don't count on it being the right way to do it. After you've collapsed this, sink the sides as unknownfolder suggested earlier.

just wanted to thank everyone for their help again. i THINK i got the base flattened out. at least its a base. thats folded flat. i dont know if its correct though. now comes the shaping. hahaha! this CP thing is hard. but fun too. if anyone has a picture of the flat base (and tips on the shaping) please post them, it'll be a great help

With the shaping of the legs, you use the graft you formed to get the tail. Also, make sure the body is thinned out. The shaping on the model was pretty straight forward for me. Sorry I did not post a picture. It probably would not have helped anyway. Sometimes when I see something in a model that looks "troublesome", I skip it if it is very tiny. After that the model can fall into place correctly... or not. The hard part of the model did not come out right, but it still made a nice poodle. Good luck learning how to interpret future crease patterns. Reading them just comes naturally the more you see them.
