Hi all I have decided that I want to start doing cps and thought Brian chans water strder looks like it could be one of the more easyer ones to try out.

I have printed out the cp and started folding away to try to make the base but it dosnt seem to mater what way round I fold it I just cant seem to get it to colaps when I have it dosnt look like anything i can work with.

Has any one else here made this model and could give me some pointers about what way i should be folding this base?

I have never compleated a model from a CP and would be so Happy If I could just do this one.

It seems to be a frog base with 4 points in the center.

Reminds me the acrocinus longimanus by Robert Lang, if you have folded this one you could probably solve this one.

Try to fold the center like a Kawasaki twist and then fold the small saquare in the center like a preliminari fold.

Ever fold John Montroll's Three-Headed Dragon? It's kind of like that. Also Peter Budai's Stag beetle, Satoshi Kamiya's Flying Hercules Beetle, and Satoshi Kamiya's Bahamut and Fumiaki Kawahata's Tuojiangosaurus start out similarly in structure.

You mean the folded base for allof the ubove are the same as for the water strider??

I have got this sort of base thing but I dont know if it is right or not as I cant see were to take it next if it is. Any one have any pics of what the base should look Like?

Not exactly, but the central structure is the same. The Three-Headed Dragon and Stag Beetle use the exact same references. Ther Hercules beetle might too. The others use a different reference (1/8 and 1/9) but have a similar structure.

Fold a bird base, all flaps down. Open sink the triangle at the top all the way. Then open out so that the rest of it is square again (with the sink still in place.) Take the flap on the right and fold it so that its top edge lies along the center line. Then open sink it along that crease. Repeat on the other three. You will have a new square base, with four flaps at the top and some layers between the "faces" on the sides. What you have effectively done is put in a couple of strip grafts, with a very appropriate size, so that everything collapses nice.

A couple of squash folds and Montroll "Wing folds" and you're done...

NOTE: I have not actually folded this CP, but I used to do extensive work with similar bases.

well im still hanving no luck with this. Dosnt matter what way I look at it It still dosnt make any scence at all to me and I just cant get it to fold into a base and when it dose i just dont think its right I just dont know what way i need to fold the marked lines and then do i need to fold them all.

Mabe im just not cut out for cp work.

Can anyone show me what the folded base looks like or what lines I fold what way to get the base?

Well after some help this is what I came up with dont know if its right or were to go from now I have tryed moving and folding things around but cant seem to get it to do anything any sugetions? Also do the base look right?


This is just a test subject for now Any input would be good.

What made you think that? Never underestimeta a Brian Chan model specially if it is an insect.

Anyway I hadn't tried complex CP's in a while and decided to do this one, it turned out to be not so complex (collapsing the CP I mean, not the whole model).

here are some pictures that might help you again to collapse the base, the final model is a whole different thing.

This is the way to collapse one side and since the model is simmetrical, the way to collapse all sides:

From here on you are on your own.

Stevieboy1, after test folding the base, I figured out that what you have is pretty much it. All you have to do now is reverse fold the flaps at the top, similar to a bird base.

Brian's CPs, especially the older ones, are generally pretty simple. It's what comes next that's pretty nuts. Dude goes full force with the finishings.

Or you can just treat that central square as a double-layered square/bird base. Just like in John Montroll's Three-headed Dragon. It's a lot easier, and it doesn't appear that there is any use for that central flap that would form anyway.

Yep, you got it. Now just Brian-Chan the hell out of it!

You have to spread squash the middle parts so that the long legs lay next to each other, two on each side. Fold the side flaps up and reverse fold two small flaps down to make the wings. Reverse fold the legs outwards as well as the antennae, then make everything thinner with mountain folds inside and things like that. That's it.

Well here is my first atempt.............



Sorry the pic is all blury late here and no good lighting.

I will atemps a second go tomoorow and hopfull it will go a bit better but i think its getting there. Still dosnt quite look like the ones in the pic im finding it akward to get the shapping right and make the body slimmer.

I also finding it dificult because there are the two smaller legs at the front to and anteni as well as the one in the center like a little tonge. I supose its all just flap placement etc. Looking at the photos i just cant work out how to get the correct placments and body shape but as they say try try again.

Just thought id add to this post here is a pic of my second atempt! Not exactly the same as brian chans but im more than happy with it now and am pleased with it!:D
