Joisel 3D Masks & Busts (BOS)

For the masks on 30-31, I was wondering if you guys dry-fold initially, then wet fold the rest? How about the Bust on page 50-51? Some masks seem to need tension from the paper, not from the drying effect of wetfolding. I guess you could wet fold the whole thing, but I was wondering what your opinions are. Attempting on Canson Mi Tiens and Ingres.

It's general practice for any model that you would wet fold, to dry fold at first, to build up the structure, then when shaping folds come into play, wet fold the more organic parts of the model (ones that require curves, etc) as well as anything else that may be required, according to personal taste. Also, different models require different strategies with folding. Joisel's masks are fairly unique in the way that you fold them, and it would be difficult to make a real decision before having folded them first. Try experimenting different techniques on cheap paper to see what works best, and then fold the model in what you think is the best way possible.

"cheap paper", whatever that is, will generally not be any use to decide on wet-folding techniques. For Joisel's masks you need thick and preferably strong paper - that's not "cheap" around here.

I do agree that you need to experiment a bit though. An alternative to the "general practice" process above is to precrease everything dry, unfold and quickly refold the humidified sheet.

i've folded all my tries with master joisels masks just dry. best results came from kraft paper even for the bust. i think it's easy to get and not really expensive.

sure, but how much info did it give you about dry-folding those masks ?

i mean, you don't have to fold these masks wet. it is possible to get proper results from dryfolding, too. i have to admit, that i don't have much hands-on experiences with wetfolding at all and usually i don't use high quality paper.
both things may suit master joisels work much better than my humble dry folds. to me wetfolding of highclass paper is still an unmatched level of origami-do but i think if i'm able to fold a model well with just a dry procedure it'll become more likely a good result with the wet try.
