ive just discovered chinese modular folding and think i looks really cool, and have started to try it but am stuck. can anyone tell me what is the difference between a normal unit and an inverted unit???

what exactly are you talking about? without links to specific model info im afraid you wont find much help here. so where can i find this "chinese modular folding"?

He's talking about those god-awful triangular units kids use to make pikachu, or hello kitty, or a swan...if you're on Deviantart, you've seen them

As long as you fold paper (no matter the shape or number of pieces) it is origami. And can be very interesting if you no how to exploit this tecninc.

In the strictest sense you are correct. Caveat: you have a small amount of time in life, spend it doing something interesting. This kind of folding isnt all that interesting. It is relatively limited, and the final result isn't all that worth the time and effort that goes into into it. Go and take a look at any book on modular origami by Tomoko Fuse. There is a chasm of beauty that yawns at the feet of the model featured above, stretching to even the simplest model of Fuse's.

Can't believe how you guys are attacking against this type of folding. I mean, I'm not much into it, but I did a swan once and it was a cool experience. Don't be mean!

I agree. I folded a swan before and while tedious, seeing the final result was defiantly rewarding enough to compensate for the work I put into it. And isn't that what beauty is an a sense, being able to look upon your work with a sense of accomplishment. And combine that with multicolor papers and it actually ends up being really cool. As for andrew's question, the only difference between a regular unit and an inverted one is that the inverted units are assembled upside down, if you get what I mean.

i hate this kind of folding. i take forever to make a panda and i dont even really like it. then of course all the non-folders like them (they never appreciate the complex models or techniques) and i have to make them one. when i make a flapping bird everyone is like :O its so amazing make me one make me one!!!!!!! :DDD and then when i take something complex or detailed everyone is like >:( who the hell wastes there time doing that? get a life. (i respond harshly )

Well I'm a fan of them, making the first one was fun. But I definitely wouldn't make it a habit. I couldn't imagine folding only chinese modular models. That would get really boring.
