Origami term for a flat whirl?

My apologies, I am new to origami and only know a few basic folds. I saw this photo online:

What is this fold? Is it modular? Are there any instructions?

I don't think it has an official name, but it is frequently used to close off cylinders - David Brill's Nut comes to mind. It's probably as simple as pleating a strip of paper, increasing the angle of the pleat each time. Cool piece of art!

Huh! I've never seen that before: http://circleofcrafters.com/irisfolding ... heart.html - I'm not sure it can be classified as origami, but what the hey. Cool.
