Watanabe Dai - A Bird on Hand

Hi guys,
I've tried this model a few times, and only ever got about 30 steps in before the size/type of paper became a problem. I finally have big, quality paper and I've gotten a lot further. But I'm having trouble with a sequence of steps.
It's in Origami Tanteidan 9th Convention. I'm having problems with the sequence of steps 63-67 though, where the arms holding the book and the bird are sunk.
Simplest of all: in step 68, it looks like the book arm is normal width, while the bird arm is half the width, is this just a diagramming error?
Next, when it says open sink, it's the one which leaves that kind of reversible triangular flap, not with the flap tucked in, right?
Anyway, on to the main problem:
I can get exactly the right shape/fold for steps 63-64, without much hassle. But then, in step 65, it shows the head part folded down, which makes seeing what is happening very tricky. I'm really not sure where exactly that bit at the top which I'm supposed to closed sink is. Or how to proceed without affecting the part folded in 63-64.
Is step 66 just showing what the result of this is? Two of the three pleats sunk to half width, leaving the back pleat the original width?
And finally, is step 67 telling me to repeat the process on the other arm?
I've studied the diagrams quite a bit, and it really does look like this sequence is the final hurdle, it'd be a shame for me to force/rush it and make a mess. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!
