Reference points are references for some creases. Some creases apear like they are on some random places on the CP, but actualy they have Reference points for them. I hope you could understand. And for the mountain/valley thing, one of mine favourite parts of folding a crease pattern is figuring out what is mountain and what is valley. It can actualy be fun.

the square on the top left is located on the thirds, and the the diagonal folds on the bottom right are angle bisectors.

i do not find it so fun. i may try it anyway. i got part of the way trough but can not figure out if i am doing it right or how to collapse it in a way that makes it lie flat.

its fun to make a bet with yourself "am i gonna do this right or not?".
but yea, overall, precreasing isn't awesome at all.

i find models where you start collapsing bases and doing not so many "fold and unfold" steps very fun. not much improvement. i just figures out i was using the wrong reference point! i will have to try again. :(

I think that with Kafar's help you could easily get all the precreasing.
