Good exercise patterns/diagrams

Post by Lycaryth »

Hi there!

I'm a short time stalker, first time poster. While I'm not a beginner, I'm definitely not an expert either as I need to practice some folds a bit more... mostly closed sinks *shivers*. I hate just repeating folds on scrap paper though and prefer to at least get something out of it so I have been searching for diagrams and patterns that I think are fairly simple and consist largely of a specific fold.

I was hoping maybe someone out there could add something to my list? Personally I need some beginner closed sink exercises, though any pattern/diagram that makes you practice a specific fold would be highly appreciated.

Here's what I gathered so far. I haven't tried all of them yet myself as I keep getting distracted by shiny-must-fold-right-now designs

Box Pleating:
- Dwarf by Eric Joisel

Crimping: (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FSuYfujNqJE)
- Chambered Nautilus Shell by Robert J. Lang
- (basic snail shell designs)
- Eastern Dragon by Joseph Wu
- Penguin by Valerie Vann - suggested by Max in a Different Thread

Reverse Folds:
- Origami magic ball

Sinks: ( open/closed http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=onOULFtkd1o )
( double open/closed: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T9HEMDpqFBM )
- (open) Andrea's Rose by J.C. Nolan
- (open) Butterfly by J.C. Nolan
- (open?) Braided Paper by J.C. Nolan
- (open) Sink Flower by Steve Biddle - added by Jonnycakes
- (closed) Bowtie by Michael Assis - added by Mike352
- Penguin by Valerie Vann - suggested by Max in a Different Thread

A little of everything:
- Hercules Beetle by Satoshi Kamiya - added by Federicoh (Warning: complex shaping)

Beginner Crease Patterns:
- Dwarf by Eric Joisel - suggested by many wise khans
- Diamond by Satoshi Kamiya

Thanks,
Lyca.

Hi Lyca,

Welcome to the forum!

As far as I know, there aren't too many models with many closed-sink folds. The youtube videos seem like a good way to practice them.

Edit:
I have a quick bowtie model that includes four closed sinks here:

Thank you :)

I tried it and find that it's a very cute design with fairly easy closed sinks that seem quite forgiving :P I hope you don't mind, I'll add it to my list in the first post. Do let me know if you prefer not to have it listed.

Welcome to the forum! A great model for sinks (I think they are all open) is the Sink Flower in The New Origami by Steve and Megumi Biddle. It is a neat little model that is fun to fold, has lots of sinks, and gives a nice result. I do not recall who the designer is.

According to http://origami.joyfulnoisewebdesign.com/index.php Steve Biddle is the author of that one. Sadly I don't have that book, but I'll definitely add it to the list!

Thank you Jonnycakes :)

a model i liked a lot to fold was the hercules beetle by satoshi kamiya, its in his book... it has a little bit of everything, squash, swivel, open and squash, unfold and re-fold, lots of inside reverse folds, some open sinks, petal folds, and rabbit ears, a little crimping and a very complex shaping! try it and get amused as i

Thank you for your suggestion :)

I wasn't sure at first since you did say it has some complex shaping. But I do agree that "a little bit of everything" is a required practice too so I added a new section for this one :D With a little warning

-------------------------------------------------

I also added
- some beginner CP's... I have seen Joisel's Dwarf suggested many times so I gave credit to "many wise khans". Satoshi's Diamond I added because if you have seen the finished product, it's not too hard to figure out your starting folds.
- Valerie Vann's Penguin under both crimps and sinks from a suggestion I noticed when going through the entire "What have you folded lately" thread at viewtopic.php?t=79&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=4095
- Eastern Dragon by Joseph Wu under crimps as I just folded it the other day and absolutely love the final crimp-shaping in the whole model. With the help of Sara's videos on this one I think I now fully understand the basic crimping processes.

I so should have titled this thread "practice"... not exercise...
Practice is fun, exercise isn't!!
