Origami chairs...

Post by Razzmatazz »

I have had this idea for awhile that I want to make a cardboard chair that will actually support me and stay in good condition. Though I don't know what the design would be like. I believe I have seen an abstract origami chair somewhere but I can't find it again.

To my question though, are there any origami chairs out there that are simple enough to be score-folded and would be stable enough for a single person.

I won't rule out modules, nor will I rule out non-traditional style rule origami.

I TOTALLY LOVE YOUR IDEA. I want to create a sturdy (for a doll or action figure), four-legged, with back chair from a single square but it's still out of my league.

I've seen a couple of real-size origamish chairs in Google Images. I suppose you have already tried that.

If you don't find what you're looking for, would you be capable of inventing your own design?

BEST OF LUCK!I would love to see this coming true!

I am looking at designing it myself now. The issue is finding a way to make the back sturdy enough to support full weight leaning backwards.
If I come up with something, I will be sure to show you, and even share the process with you.

I have found a plausible origami design in a book that could be used to make a chair. I figure I might as well test this design.
I tested it out of 0.5mm cardboard with a seat the size of 27.5mm. It worked out nicely until the arms got really thick and the cardboard split through the un-scored layer. The cool thing is, I am projecting the actual model to have a seat the width of 400mm (40cm, or almost half a meter). This would result in (proportional to the test model I folded, having 0.5mm thick cardboard) the synonymous cardboard being around 7.2mm.

That is good that the model was too thick in the test fold because my cardboard I have available that is of any large size is 5mm at most. Of course, this means that, although I could fold it easily, it might not have the strength the test fold did. I will maybe upload pictures later.

I thought of something that might work--corrugations. Use some kind of a corrugated structure (horizontal pleats with a bunch of reverse-folds. When used right, it can support a lot of weight. The trick is keeping the ends of the corrugation in the right place, though.
